Ahoy Sailors! This weekend Aruba hosts its annual Aruba International Regatta event, where international sailors will compete in several sailing competitions. During Aug 14th until August 16th, the Surfside beach in Oranjestad is the place to be!
Approximately 125 contestants are competing, flying in from countries such as the US, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia and Venezuela. Beautiful sail ships from Bonaire and Curacao are also setting sail to Aruba this week in order to compete in the international sporting event.
Aruba, with its natural trade winds, calm shallow waters, and warm temperatures offers the perfect setting for such a sailing event. But what mostly differentiates Aruba from the other islands is the visibility of the races for the spectators on the beach! You can almost imagine you are sailing away yourself!
This year’s edition will increase its focus on sustainability. The Aruba International Regatta has already obtained the Silver status of Sailors for the Sea – Clean Regatta’s and the objective is to keep the beach, the sea and the air clean; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is the motto! Next year the Aruba Regatta will aim to grow into a full week event, according to organizer Eric Mijts.
Three days of action and competition for yachts, beach cats, sunfishes, optimists, windsurfers and kite surfers; three evenings of music and parties for all participants and spectators, that’s what’s to be expected this weekend!
