I would imagine that if you can plug the headphones in for the movies, you can do the same for the music channel as well. The crew probably assumes that people will play with the buttons on the armrest and discover what you found as well. And if you asked, they'd probably tell you.
If only more Canadian flights had this sort of thing as opposed to being force-fed what they want you to hear. The biggest treat I ever got on a flight was a United flight that gave not only a choice of music, but a choice of films as well. Now that's a bonus... got to watch "Shine a Light", the Rolling Stones film. Beats the heck out of "Marley and Me" again, and again, and again...
