we still have 2 rolled and in the tubes
a few years ago we brought home a few acrylics for real short $$.
we had one framed at michael's and the mounting/framing was well over $150.
so, the other 2 are still rolled/stored.
one of our goals of retirement was learning how to matt and frame.

Our largest we have brought home was a print about 24 x 46. That was easy- rolled and placed in a tube and placed in the overhead compartment. At other times we have brought home prints which were just rolled and held closed by paperclip or rubberband. Those are THE most difficult not to mangle.
Another trip we purchased a framed piece including glass. That was wrapped heavily in brown paper and also hand carried. The flight attendant offered to store it. I don't know where, but it made it home safe and sound and has been hanging on our walls for the last 12 years.
Small framed pieces can easily be packed in your luggage and wrapped in clothing for cushioning.
