IMO - it's so much easier to leave from Newark. I hated having to schlep all the way from JFK to NJ. We just booked our trip for next July on Continental - we always book one way when the dates become available (sometimes it works out to be cheaper). It was Economy $169 one way for 7/1, 7/2 and 7/3.

$500 isnt bad for round trip - I've paid as much as $700 and as little as $385. Sometimes you just gotta take a gamble. (obviously, the $700 ticket was a large gamble on our part!)

The preferred seating means that they're holding those seats to be sold at higher prices later on. They usually release them, so if you call up (or keep checking online) as it gets closer to your flight, you can change your seat to one of those in the front. We usually do that when we dont use our miles to upgrade to First Class. My husband likes the 5th row - just after first class since it offers the most leg room.
