Personally, I like to buy a golf shirt at each place that we visit. The kicker, is that the shirt has to be unique, and have a great association with the place in question. Thus for Aruba, the divi tree, or natural bridge, etc.
Second factor is the price - realistically the shirts should stay in the $20 - $25 range, and that should keep sales up. If merchandise is reasonably priced, and usable, then tourists are much more likely to buy multiple items. A t-shirt for $20 doesn't cut it.

Unfortunate that the small stores are disappearing, but the big-box and big-chain concept is only going to get bigger as the economy continues to worsen, which I personally think it will.
