From what I have read in trying to decide whether or not to vaccinate our dd is the danger to children and pregnant women. This is the category hit the hardest. And there have been propotionately more deaths in this category.
Most years "the flu" strikes the elderly the hardest.
I did hear someone say, not my opinion , that it is "psychological" thing where if an elderly person dies they have lived out their life and were closer to the end anyway. When death strikes a pregnant woman or a child there are many more emotions and "sadness" to deal with. THUS the great concern.
Either way, H1N1 is out there. Think of how many children nowadays have asthma. H1N1 affects the respiratory system and brings on complications...thus you hear of hospitalizations.
