We bring a combo of cash, travelers checks, and credit card. Only use the CC for the hotel and car rental. We use the travelers checks to pay for restaurant tabs, bar tabs, grocery store purchases, etc. We never have to cash them and use them just like cash. Only thing that has changed recently is that if we use them at the grocery store they are now asking for a passport for I.D. (not a big deal since we know to bring it with us if we're making a large grocery store run.)
