The News bankrupt after 58 years
18 Nov, 2009, 07:30 (GMT -04:00)

The office of the free English newspaper The News has been closed since two weeks. The court had pronounced an adjudication order at the beginning of this week.
ORANJESTAD — The court had declared the bankruptcy of the English newspaper The News last Monday. A few employees of the newspaper had filed the petition in bankruptcy, as they had not received a large part of their salary for September and October. The bank accounts had been ‘blocked’ by the bank so that the newspaper had not been able to fulfill its obligations. The judge had rejected a request for postponement from the lawyers of the family business.
A loyal reader had given the following comment on hearing the news of the bankruptcy of the newspaper: “No News is bad news.” The court had immediately appointed a curator on Monday to liquidate the property of the bankrupt company and come up with an apportionment amongst the creditors. According to journalist and photographer Rosalie Klein, a former employee and one of the bankruptcy petitioners, the downfall of the newspaper was not only due to financial hard times. “Of course, this had played a role, but personal circumstances of the owners and the lack of management had also contributed to the downfall of the newspaper,” said Klein. The last straw had been the blocking of the newspaper’s bank accounts by Aruba Bank due to mortgage payments in arrears, according to the journalist. Moreover, the company supposedly also had tax problems. The company could no longer fulfill their obligations, amongst which the personnel salaries, after the accounts had been blocked.
The newspaper had been popular with tourists. Gerardus Schouten and his wife Bernadette Schouten-Blanchard had established the newspaper in 1951. Schouten had originally come to the island with his wife to work at the Lago refinery. ‘During strikes, he had started printing a newsletter to keep the employees informed of all developments.’
Even though The Lago Colony had published a small internal paper named the Esso Times, The News is considered as the island’s first English newspaper, Rosalie Klein explains. The newspaper had also been the first Aruban daily paper that became a member of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), an international press organization.
By one’s own account, the newspaper had also been the first daily paper to be printed in color. After Sonia Wever-Schouten had become general director, the newspaper had been the first – and for a long time – the only one that had been published on Sundays.

ORANJESTAD — Tourists, amongst which, European Dutch citizens, are allowed to stay longer on Aruba. The new cabinet had decided to reverse the Foreigners’ Admission Decision, which had become effective per August 1st, and had caused substantial unrest, especially amongst the Dutch citizens. This implies that the maximum stay of 180 days will be calculated per calendar year again, and not over the last twelve months.

The latter had led to European Dutch citizens being sent back by the Immigration Department during the past months. It regarded, amongst others, pensioners that have had a second house on Aruba for decades. There had also been unrest amongst the American community as the new regulation had also applied to them. Minister of Justice and Education, Arthur Dowers, had announced this morning that the stricter regulation would be reversed. This also implies that Kingdom citizens and residents of other EU-countries as well as Americans can stay longer than six months during one year (thus the last twelve months)
This newspaper had reported on the stricter admission of amongst others European Dutch citizens for the first time in September. The government, in particular admission organization Dimas, had implemented the stricter regulations without informing citizens or the tourists. Moreover, there was a lack of clarity on the implementation and officials of Dimas, Arubahuis and the Immigration Department had given contradictive information. The Dutch politicians had also intervened with the stricter regulations. The Dutch State Secretary Ank Bijleveld-Schouten (Kingdom Relations, CDA) had answered Chamber-questions of the PVV that Aruba had not changed the regulation, but only implemented such better since the Immigration Department had acquired a new system, Radex, which could chart the duration of the residence.
In first instance, the Dutch representative on Aruba (VNO) had also been surprised by the commotion of the Dutch citizens who had been sent back because of the new regulation. For that matter, Bijleveld had criticized Aruba as the island had suddenly started to stop them at the border.
The Minister of Alien Affairs, Booshi Wever (MEP) had informed this newspaper at the beginning of October that the admission of tourists had certainly become stricter.
“In order to express our good faith towards those Dutch citizens”, he had therefore decided on a transitional arrangement and to provide the duped visitors with a temporary permit until January 2010.

From another board.

November 11th 2009, Aruba.

ORANJESTAD-Endy Croes, Director of Aruba Lotto Foundation is pleased to announce that soon a casino will be opening in the departure hall at the airport. The negotiations for a casino at the airport took 6 years, said Croes.

The previous government passed a law in 2006, granting Aruba Lotto Foundation a license to operate a casino at the airport. After receiving the permit in 2006, extensive negotiations were done with the Director of Aruba Airport Authority, Peter Steinmetz. The obstacle was mainly finding
a suitable location at the airport to operate the casino.

For the casino to be profitable at the airport, it must be located at an area with heavy pedestrian traffic, according to a feasibility study. The airport has offered three very small spaces near the departure gates 1,2 and 3. Croes was not pleased with the spaces offered at the airport, and the project for a casino was put on hold.

In 2008, the foundation was approached by a director who operates different retail stores at the airport. Through the intermediation of the director at that time, a new round of negotiations began
with the Lotto Foundation, and Peter Steinmetz. The results are that Aruba Lotto Foundation will receive a space near gate 8, another space near gate 4, and a third space opposite Sbarro Pizza.

In the above mentioned spaces, slot machines will be placed. The slot machines will be operated by 5 local employees, including 1 manager. Within 3 weeks Aruba Lotto Foundation will start hiring employees for the casino. At present construction of the casino at the airport is in full swing, and an opening date will be announced shortly.
