Arikok Park

Is this the park that a 4x4 is needed to drive into and over or can you get in with a car or is it walking only? I am a photographer and not an adventurer and we're coming down in Nov and I've been to Aruba 12 times but I have never visited Arikok Park. Is there another park that I've read about that requires a 4x4?

In the past I've driven along the coast from the lighthouse to the natural bridge and from Baby Beach along the coast about 2 miles

Thanks, Kent

Really the only part of Arikok which requires a 4 x 4 is the Natural Pool. For the extra $25 or so for the day we usually rent an all wheel drive SUV for comfort, four doors and AIR CONDITIONING. Have a great time there are so many fabulous photo opportunities. See if you can find these blow holes:

Also be on the look out for wild donkeys and goats.

Thanks, Arubalisa. Nothing against the taxis in Aruba, but we always rent a car and with the new airport, we rent there. We like to explore your wonderful country and eat at the away from town restaurants--- the one at the end of the airport runway closest to town, Marita Pirata (spelling??), Flying Fishbone, Papaimento, etc. and having a car is convenient. Also we like to drive around the island like the lighthouse and Baby Beach, etc.

Do you know how far it is to walk from to the Natural Pool from where you have to park your car in Arikok?

Finally, I've seen a lot of goats but never and wild donkeys. I plan to visit the donkey sanctuary and ostrich when we come in November.

Great photos---- I'll try to find those places.

Thanks, Kent

I am guessing it would be a GOOD hour of walking. As the crow flies, it is about 1 3/4 miles over a very rough and rocky terrain. For an idea of what the terrain is like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKB1jSWXij0notice about 1:27 into the video the rear right tire of the vehicle coming up entirely off of the ground?

Bring PLENTY of water and wear sufficient sunscreen. Last time we drove it by 4 x 4 it was 45 minutes.

The last couple of times we have seen the wild donkeys at the southern end of Arikok near the Grapefield climbing area and Guadikiriri Cave.

Thanks, Arubalisa. I'll check out the you-tube. Is there anything else to see after the walk or 45 mintue ride other than the natural pool?

Nothing but wilderness! By any chance are you from GA. as in Georgia?

Last time down my wife went cheap and got a little rental car and that bottomed out several times driving on the main road through Arikok. I'd suggest at least a small jeep-ish vehicle unless the road improvements have been completed in the last couple months.

If you want to drive to the natural pool you better get something more rugged than the little "jeeps" and have some decent off road driving experience.
