A fairly recent study performed in St. Maarten found unsafe levels of ciguatoxin (cause of ciguatera poisoning) in lionfish in their area. This study was specific to the waters of St. Maarten and the areas around that island has historically had high levels of ciguatoxin.

Unfortunately, I saw one lionfish on each of my three dives today. On the plus side, I saw half a dozen stingrays and turtles each, on the coral at Arashi.

The TSA thought it looked like a weapon. Of course, so did my nail clippers, so I'm not sure if they were right or not.

Three large ones on the reef at the fingers, just outside Mangel Halto. The largest one was around a foot long and absolutely beautiful.
