I feel very safe, close to shore at Boca Catalina and Catalina cover. Have heard horror stories about that area of Baby Beach.

The only horror stories I've seen or heard have been the third hand vague warnings here. My wife is a terrible swimmer, she tried the open water snorkeling at the Antilla with DePalm and Mangel Alto with the kayak adventure (her idea, not mine) and decided she doesn't want to do that anymore. Yet she feels extremely comfortable anywhere around baby beach. Most of the area I'm talking about is only four to five feet deep and has no rip current or wave action thanks to the breakwater. In fact, it's much safer than the designated "snorkeling spot" on the linked map.

A couple drowned and died snorkeling Baby Beach in October 2006. Tourists staying at the Marriott.

I cannot provide a link to the newspaper article because it was not archived, but you can google it for futther info.
