best mode of transport

I was wondering what the transportation situation is like there. I read a thread that said buses aren't bad but don't go to every spot on the island. I'd like to get to some semi isolated areas and beaches away from the usual crowds since I'll be living there for a while. Is it a bike friendly place? Could I get get to some beaches near Oranjestad on bike? Would a scooter purchase be better? I'm not sure about buying a car there since I'll only be there for about 8 months and want to save some money as well.

bike friendly
Less so than years past. More cars these days with enough engaged in "zoom-zoom" makes the major roads a concern (I'd say). However, once off these roads I'd say you'd be able to get about ok. A scooter might be best. While small, the island is still big enough to make getting to distance beaches rather time consuming if on a bicycle.
