Camera

Looking to surprise my husband with a new camera for Christmas. One that takes nice underwater pictures of the fish in Aruba...I've seen a few on-line, any recommendations? I ordered the laminated fish card to go with it..lol, thanks for the info and link, I think that will be a cute addition.

We love Olympus cameras, just purchased our fourth one as a Christmas gift. There are some suggestions for specific cameras at http://www.aruba.com/forum/tags/unde...%20camera.html

It is really going to depend upon whether the camera will be used for only snorkeling or diving as well and of course price

The Fujifilm XP is inexpensive and took pretty good pics. Not pro photographer quality, but I was really happy with the purchase. Target has them on price reduction sometimes. Almost every pic I took was a keeper, unlike the disposable cameras where you take 24 pics and get maybe 2 or 3.

Pics in 2

I talked my dad into getting the Canon Powershot Elph 300 HS and to buy the separate waterproof case for it. It takes great pictures and does HD video as well. I'm not sure what your budget is but the camera was $189 and the case was another $50.

We love our Olumpus Stylus 850 SW

It's shock proof and waterproof-which has to proved to be a valuable quality more times than I can count!

It's 8.0 megapixel so it does do a good job. We've brought it to Aruba several times and really love the pictures it takes. I'll attach my favorite...my husband snorkeling on the Jolly Pirates cruise a few years ago.

You can click on my website and see all the pics I have taken. It takes the best underwater pics and on top of the water. Its the olympus sp 8000. I have 5 of them because I LOVE THEM!!! I actually bought most of them in Aruba and they were $399 with a 8 gb memory card so you can take 1,000's of pictures. The last one I biught has a gps on it. Kent

Kent's photos are great with that unit he uses. And if the camera survived all of his water antics, it has to be a good one.

On a similar but different tack, I've been using the GoPro Surf Hero video camera for in the water and in the air stuff. As long as there is good light, this boxy little thing does a darn good job. It's a little tricky to set up but after 2 tries I had it working right and was off to the races, I mean photo missions. Here's a link to my Amazon review:

Some footage taken in the air:

And in the water at the rocky point near Baby Beach:

Again, this is a sort of specialized device that people use for stunts, mountain biking, snorkeling, and Red Bull type of extreme flying. All the same, it works great for me. With a bit of software manipulation you can do time-lapse stuff like this from the Atlantic City Boardwalk:

Good luck!
