Cheap Fishing

Hello All,

Coming to Aruba for the first time the end of July and wanted to take my two sons fishing. I have read the cheapest way to go is go with a local and offer gas money or something like that. Any help would be great since we will be on a tight budget this time.

How old are your sons? Where are you staying? Are you looking to catch large game fish or simply bottom fishing?

I seriously doubt that you will find a fisherman that would take you out for gas money, I cannot really see any reason that he would do it (unless it is a personal friend or something).

First of all, if he wanted to be on the water he would be fishing himself and making money.

Secondly he is not allowed to take you and receive payment, without having a "water transport license", the government and coast guard are pretty tough on things like that.

Every time I put my boat in the water with fishing rods (at the Marriott), I have several people running up to me to try to book me to go fishing, so I think that if the fisherman would take you out and take the risk, he would expect a lot more than "gas money".

I understand your question as there has been a big gap in the market as there has not really been any smaller boats to do flats or near shore fishing for very small groups.

Recently there is one or two that have gotten licenses to do this with smaller boats. I see them out there when I am out, but at this time I do not have their websites or contact information, but maybe someone else can help with that.
These boats are pretty new and cool with big engines, so I doubt that they will fall under the category of "cheap fishing" though.

If you just want to have fun with your boys and not spend a lot of money, I would recommend that you "go local" and do balloon fishing at the Malmok cliffs. You can buy the gear at the marine store at the Renaissance Mall at the marina in Oranjestad or at the boat and tackle store next to Condemsa (if you have a car). The guy at the last shop is a real expert and will show you how to do it. I guess that buying a full balloon fishing set will set you back around $30 and then you go buy some frozen ballyhoo's at the supermarkets and you can fish everyday for that money, and still have a chance to catch pretty big fish and are sure to relax and enjoy the beautiful sunset every evening

This way you will also meet the locals that fish there every evening and like all Arubians they will welcome you with open arms and give you great tips.
Even if you don't catch anything you will almost for sure make new friends and have a ball.

What is balloon fishing? I think I know, but want to be certain.

Condemsa....what, where is that?

Ballyhoos? What are these?

PS....my daughters and I have had some good luck...for free....fishing off the pier behind the Renaissance Island restaurant.

Just saw that I missed Rob's questions, sorry about that, but better late than never.

Balloon fishing, is when you have your line on a normal rod or more traditionally on a kind of roll, where you hand roll the line off and on (no mechanics). At the end of the line you have a special tackle which is very close to a standard bottom fishing set-up, with bait like squid or ballyhoo. Instead of casting the tackle, you tie a balloon to it and let the trade winds carry it out for i.e. 100 yards or more. You then pull hard on the line and the balloon will release and the bait and tackle will sink to the bottom. Then you have a case of Balashi and wait.

First of all to answer the original question isn't there a party boat for bottom fishing at the Renaisance marina? I see him there every year and he charges around $45-60 pp to bottom fish some inshore reefs.

Balloon fishing - sounds interesting but why not just anchor up over the structure or spot you want to fish and drop the line in. We kite fish sometimes that has proven to be productive.

We use ballyhoos here in NJ while fishing the deep. We troll them with islanders. It's like candy to our white marlin, Big Eye and Yellowfin tunas!

Rob there's a tackle shot right next to Japanese place or few stores across from the casino at the market place. He's been there for maybe 2-3 years. I bought a telescopic setup there and never even used it. Still in its packaging in my garage. But I know you guys fish on Ren island, check him out next time for some secret baits.

That is the marina. The pier that is angled is where the paryt boat docks, at the end. The bait shop is in the Seaport Village Mall, along the outside facing the marina. He sells various baits and terminal tackle.
