President of the Aruba Tae Kwon Do Association, Jose “Chaco” Cornelio and Vice President of Art Bo, Eric Barry, welcomed media to announce that for the first time, the island will simultaneously host two international Tae Kwon Do Championship matches. The third WTF World Para-Tae Kwon Do Championships and the WTF World Cup Tae Kwondo Team Championships, beginning on Thursday, November 22, with the final matches taking place on Sunday, November 25.
Organizers expect over 310 participants, a number of them national champions. Competitors from the last two Olympics will be on the roster, and referees who presided over the Tae Kwon Do matches at the Olympic World Games in London this past summer. Competitors from 26 nations, including Iran, Korea, Mongolia, Nepal, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Finland, France, Greece, Russia, Spain, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, USA, Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic have confirmed their participation in the events.
All matches will be conducted at the Betico Croes Sport Center in Santa Cruz, beginning at 9:00 am with the World Para-Tae Kwon Do Championships on November 22. Awards will be presented that evening.
The WTF World Cup 2012 preliminary matches will begin the next day; Quarter, semi- and final matches will take place on Sunday, the 25th. Prior to actual events, Aruba is hosting a WTF Workshop for Para-Tae Kwon Do and Council meetings of the World Tae Kwon Do Federation.
Events will be broadcast via live streaming on the Internet. Advanced tickets for the matches are on sale at Wong Sheung Wong restaurant in Oranjestad for $10 per day, and at the door. Promoters promise many exciting surprises for spectators, including three major league baseball players from the New York Yankees, among them the legendary Derek Jeter, who will greet fans and give autographs.
