While we were in Aruba Oct 23-30, 2010.

We were told the Westin CLOSED. Something about unpaid taxes or something. Does anyone know any more about this?

I thought people should know.

ORANJESTAD — The AIB (Aruba Investment Bank) will soon come with an explanation on their attachment of the Casablanca Casino in the Westin Hotel Monday afternoon. Until now, AIB director Frendsel Giel only wants to say that AIB had indeed placed an attachment. He did not want to reveal the how and when ‘because they are still a client’, but said he would come with an explanation soon.

The director of Westin, Richard Roy also says he cannot comment on the case. “The management of the casino has nothing to do with the hotel,” says Roy. According to him, Aruba Hotel Enterprises (AHE) deals with the casino. This organization subsequently contracted it out to Diamond Gaming of Belfonti Capital, according to the director. Roy is also aware that AIB has a conflict with this Diamond Gaming and that the bank took them to court.

For that matter, Westin ‘was surprised just like everyone else’ when AIB placed the attachment last Monday. “We knew something was going on, but we had not expected the casino would be closed down.” He can therefore only offer apologies to his hotel guests who wish to make use of the casino.
