Historia di Aruba
This is an amazing website full of Aruba history including photographs. Tourism If you scroll about half way down you will see a few photos of Palm beach in the 1950's, including an artist rendering of the newly completed Aruba Caribbean Hotel, the first luxury hotel on the island. Also included are photos of the original: Manchebo Divi Divi Aruba Beach Club The page also mentions the Ritz Carlton but evidently has not been updated since construction has progressed.

Hopefully this link goes to the English version of the site
It is very difficult in my mind to picture such a beautiful stretch of beach the way it used to look as opposed to what it has become. On the other hand, as the article points out, the opening of the Aruba Caribbean Hotel created 120 "for locals".

Arubalisa, Thanks for the article and pics. My first trip to Aruba was in 1977 and I did not return until 2001 due to busy family life. I was so surprised then by the changes. I remember walking from the Holiday Inn to the Aruba Caribbean(Radisson, now) every morning (in 1977) and the beach always seemed empty. There were no water sports set up that I remembered and many empty properties along the way. The Concord had just opened and the Marriott wasn't even a thought yet. Also, mostly, we ate at the hotel. I don't remember there being so many dining options. Also, my dh had to wear a sports coat to dinner. That would never happen now. I also remember walking out on the airfield to board the plane. My, how things have changed, but Aruba is still a wonderful place to be.

Some of those pictures bring back fond memories. I remember the original Carib hotel, the Bali floating restaurant, the original Divi and Manchebo hotels, and the ABC as it was being built (I purchased a timeshare in the ABC the year before it opened over 30 years ago).
