I have been a lurker for years, we are presently on our 9th, 8th and 6th trips to Aruba. Our crew is our "small family" of me, my husband, our 7 1/2 year old daughter and 5 year old son. As I follow the boards, I was very sad to see the bad night had at Matthews as it is one of our favorites and has been for years.
In spite of the review, and with a bit of trepidation we went for dinner a few nights back with the our crew. We shouldn't have worried. The food was excellent as always. More importantly, the service was spot on and attentive. Water glasses stayed filled, and plates removed . The was food prompt and appropriately timed. One of the ways I judge wait staff is how they deal with my kids - the wait staff at Matthews engaged the kids by speaking Spanish to them (they go to a school that teaches Spanish), pointed out the crabs in the bed behind us, told the kids to give the crabs bits of bread, and all in all made a great experience as dining with kids can be somewhat of a crap shoot.
Back to the food. We shared a caprese salad and calamari for our appetizers. Both were appropriately portion sized and tasted excellent. For our main courses we both had the grouper special which was heavenly and I could have drank the accompanying sauce. Matthews has kid's meals and there were no complaints from either child as to their filet mignon or chicken fingers. I was just pleased they had a kid's menu after our outing to Red Fish which was less than stellar on a number of levels particularly service, but that is another post.
Maybe Matthews had an off night - who knows. What I do know is that we hit them on a good night and I am glad we went.
