    Matthews; no thank you!

We have always liked Matthews. Each trip we have dined here at least once so it was with confidence that we walked over for an early dinner. It was early, 5:30. We know they have a rowdy happy hour so we expected it so no issues.

The woman who seated us took the drink order. When she came back Tom placed the order because I had gone over to look at the beach. He commented that she kind of made a face at him and he wasn't sure she got the order. I said well I think she's actually the hostess, shrugged and said someone would probably be over. Wrong! The kitchen staff brought out our dinner. A bread basket was dropped off with a spit of butter. Yes, I said spit, amounting to a teaspoon of butter for 2 people and. 4 rolls. Since we didn't know who our server was we asked someone if we could get more butter. Yup, another spit, really! Time goes on, other tables are checked on, they even get an offer of cracked pepper. Us, nothing, no how is your dinner, do you need anything. I say there must have been a miscommunication and no one is assigned to our table. I call someone over and say we don't know who our server is but I would like to get a glass of wine. The guy comes over I say I apologize but we didn't know who was handling this table. His response, "I'll do it." I will say there were all of 4 tables filled in the dining room and my feeling is there is no excuse to ignore someone. Since they add the 15% gratuity they feel no need to give service. Every server had a puss on. The food was just okay. Will we go back, absolutely NOT!

Did you speak with the manager.... or just give up...? There have been times where it just wasn't worth it to talk to anyone....!

Wow that is terrible. I hope you did not tip beyond the added 15% service charge. I mean you did not even know who your waiter was and wasn't getting any attention.

Sorry you had a bad experience. A bad dinner can put a damper on the whole day. We go to Matthews most trips. We like the food, but the service is a little slow. We chalk it up to being on vacation and since we are not in a rush we live with it.

Maybe the waitstaff thought they were on vacation, too!

Sorry for the inconvenience. It's disappointing if you had always a great experience and then something like this. I think I would let the owner know.

Our experience at Matthews at the beginning of the month was very different. Our waiter was very attentive and they even brought my husband out a dessert with a sparkler for his birthday but that is not enough to make us go back. My husband got his favorite argentinean steak and asked for it medium. It was raw on the inside. We told the waiter who took it back. It reappeared less than 5 minutes later and was still undercooked. He ate enough to feel fed and gave up. The time before that ( in May) we were bombarded by flies and had a waiter who left us for long ( even considering island time) periods of times. He did not understand English and it took us at least 30 minutes to get the bill. They re now off our list also. Ricardos has the same menu, better service, better vegetables so we now will go there.

As we were leaving I asked if there had been a change in management and they said no. At that point I decided to just move on. Like Judge Judy says if you ate the steak you pay for the steak and we ate our dinners so I didn't see the point in saying anything more. I believe since they know they'll get something from the sc they just don't bother. It's a shame.
