    Restaurant Reviews 7/23-8/6

    Saturday, 7/23
    Arrival day.
Dinner at Mulligans. Apps were onion rings and calamari.
Dinner entrees were: Pulled pork sandwich with slaw/onion rings and side of fries; chicken cesar salad, seared tuna salad and chicken fingers and fries. All were good but nothing special. DM said the pulled pork sandwich was too much and ended up pulling out the filling and eating it without bun.

    Lunch at the pool bar.
Dinner at Matthew’s. Entrees were: 2 orders of grilled mahi mahi, surf and turf and spaghetti. Food was okay and very expensive for what you got and compared to other places. Was also very warm where we were sitting.

Lunch: Italian and Farmers salads from Pizza Bob’s. Rating: B
Dinner at Bavaria. Apps were: Potato soup, salad and pretzel. Entrees were: chicken schnitzel, weiner schnitzel, grouper almondine and chicken fingers. Some beer and Riesling wine. Really can’t say enough good things about this place. The place is no frills but the the owner is friendly, the service is great, the prices are very reasonable and the food is very tasty.

Lunch at The Kitchen. For those who aren’t familiar with this place, the kitchen is a place open for lunch only (they close at 3:00pm). You can eat in or take out but the concept is that it is “buffet style”. Lots of salad fixings and an array of hot dishes. Price is per weight. We love it and went there twice during our visit.

Dinner at Daniel’s Steak and Chop house. Apps were wedge salad and hearts of palm salad. Dinner entrees were: 3- 6oz filet mignons. Sides of sautéed spinach. Sauce choices were mushroom and chimicurri. All steaks also come with mixed veggies. Strawberry gelato for dessert.
Last year they did not have the hearts of palm salad. This year they did. It arrived with no hearts of palm!! I brought this to their attention and it was quickly remedied, however, some of the hearts of palm were very tough. Other than that, everything else was delicious. All of the filets were perfectly cooked and the sauces are heaven (although you don’t want to use too much because the flavor of the steak is wonderful on its own).

Lunch: Sidebar. 1 sidebar burger, 1 kale and quinoa salad, 1 sidebar salad with grilled chicken and 1 pasta with butter. Overall rating: B+

Dinner at Barney’s. 5 early bird dinners and 3 kids entrees. 1st course include soup, salad and wings. 5 Almond groupers with mixed veggies and 5 dame blanches for dessert. Kids got chicken nuggets and shrimp. Everything delicious!
Overall rating: A- (would have been A but DM didn’t like her drink)
    Thursday, 7/28
    Lazy day. Leftovers for lunch.
Dinner was takeout from Hung Paradise: Tomato soup, chicken sate, fried bananas, loempia (big eggroll), chicken & broccoli, lemon chicken and pork fried rice. Everything was great and we had tons of leftovers. The chicken & broccoli was a bit bland but that was because DD wanted it in white sauce instead of the more traditional brown sauce.

Lunch at Pizza and More. Wow. First time we tried this place. Had always wanted to go but old downtown location was difficult to park once trolley was built. Since they moved to orange plaza it is much more convenient. We got 2 personal pizzas (one plain and one mushroom), 1 cesar salad with chicken, one caprese salad, one seafood soup and one combination beef lasagna and caprese salad. They also put homemade foccacia bread on the table. The service was outstanding. Owner was great. Came over and chatted with us for a while. The food was absolutely delicious. Ordered takeout one other day and tried calling a 3rd day but they were closing so ended up ordering from Pizza Bob’s (no comparison). Hope they do well at the new location because the pizza and homemade pastas are fabulous. Had leftovers.

Dinner at Driftwood: Fresh catch was Mahi Mahi. I was a little disappointed at first because I was really looking forward to Wahoo but the mahi was great. No apps because we ate too much at lunch. Ordered 2 orders of Mahi (Aruban style), 1 lobster tail and one past with marinara sauce. Came with veggies and either potato or rice. Very fresh and tasty. Good service.

    Saturday, 7/30
Leftovers for lunch. Ordered takeout dinner from Pizza and More AGAIN for DM and DD. Date Night for Hubby and me!!
Dinner at 2 Fools and a Bull. The fools are not usually opened on weekends, however, they had closed for 2 weeks due to the chef being on holiday back in Holland and opened special on Saturday to try to accommodate those who had reservations during the closed weeks. This was our second visit to see the Fools. On our last visit, there was the original chef and now they have a new chef. Our last visit was wonderful and in my opinion, this visit was even better than the first!! We were a smaller party (12 instead of the usual 16) but that did not make a difference. The food, wine and laughs flowed all evening. First course was carpacio of roast beef accompanied by a special “shot” of tuna tartare and fried onion. It was heaven. The second course was spicy shrimp in a puff pastry. The 3rd course was halibut with coconut rice and ginger sauce, the 4th course was rack of lamb with chorizo mashed potatoes and chimichurri sauce. I am not a lover of lamb but this was incredible. Absolutely perfectly cooked. The “happy ending” dessert was a chocolate lavea cke with homemade icecream, chocolate ganache and chopped nuts. OMG everything was divine. The wine pairings were spot on. The chef (Bas) was tired and a bit jet lagged but none of that showed in his creations. After dinner, we all chatted a bit on the patio on all agreed this had been our best meal on the island by far.

    Sunday, 7/31
Lunch at the Hard Rock café. Entrees were: Chicken arugula salad, fish tacos, swiss mushroom burger and chicken tenders and fries. I did not think a chain place would have such good food but we were all pleasantly surprised. No complaints. Overall rating: B+
Dinner at Bingo. We hadn’t been to Bingo in quite a few years and were very happy that we went back. Apps were: 1 Cesar salad and 2 goat cheese salads. Entrees were: 2 Asian chickens, 1 mixed grill and 1 pasta with sauce. Desserts were: 1 sorbet, 1 fried ice cream and 1 chocolate mousse. The goat cheese salad and the fried ice cream were my absolute favorites. They were just so good. The prices are very reasonable and the great thing is you can order anything in a small or large portion. We ordered everything in small and it was still a perfect amount. We will be back next year again for sure.

    Monday, 8/1
Breakfast at Linda’s pancakes. 1 strawberry and whipped cream, 1 gouda, ham and mushroom and 1 gouda and ham. 1 order of eggs, toast and bacon. After a disappointing breakfast last year at Dutchpancakehouse (all pancakes were burnt) we were happy to be back at Linda’s.
    Overall rating: B+
Dinner at Chalet Suisse. Whoops – didn’t write meals down on this one. From memory I know that it was 8 of us (5 adults and 3 children). I know all of the adults did the early bird special. Some got soup and some got salad and then for entrees some got grouper and some got steak. For dessert there was four hot kisses and one strudel. Always great service. Always great food. Always great drinks. Early bird is the way to go as far as cost.

    Tuesday, 8/2
    Lunch at the Kitchen again.
Dinner at Barefoot. Date Night #2 for hubby and me. Apps were Greek salad and the special goat cheese app. FABULOUS. Entrees were: shellfish trio and chicken and pineapple. Dessert was the sampler. As always, the food, ambiance and service is great. Slightly disappointing that it was a bit cloudy and we didn’t get a great sunset but that is no fault of the restaurant.
    Overall rating: A

    Wednesday, 8/3
Breakfast at Salt and Pepper. This is the first time we had tried Salt and Pepper. Great breakfast choices. The adults all got the American breakfast and DD got regular chocolate chip pancakes. Will be back. Overall rating: A-
Dinner at West Deck: We couldn’t get in last year and were disappointed because we love West Deck. Glad to be back. 5 adults and 3 children and we shared 2 orders of calamari, 2 orders of grouper fingers (my favorite), 2 orders of ribs, 1 order tenderloin and plantain, 2 orders arashi chicken, 1 order funchi w/cheese and 1 order Caribbean rice. Kids also split a burger. Love the atmosphere and the small plates. Good drinks too. Decent value and decent service.

    Thursday, 8/4
Breakfast at Mulligans. 3 complete breakfasts (one free from winning pool BINGO) and one order strawberry pancakes. Overall rating: B+
Dinner at Blossoms. This was our first time at Blossoms. Our friends go every year. I have been to hibachi type restaurants before but it was the first time for DD. She loved it. Our chef was funny and talented. He let the kids interact with him and crack eggs. Food was good. Soup was good. Salad was weird. Did not have traditional “ginger dressing” but tasted more like French dressing. Wasn’t’ bad just not traditional and what I was used to. Overall a fun night with good food. Would definitely go back again.

Dessert: Gelato up at the Gellatisimo. Always fabulous. Overall rating: A

    Friday, 8/5
Leftover for breakfast and lunch. Final full day so had to clean out fridge.
Dinner at Yemanja. This has been our traditional final dinner spot for the past few years. We love it. Huge menu. Great service. Excellent food. We all started with soups. Entrees were: filet mignon, salmon and fish (don’t remember which one). Table sides come with rice, veggies and black beans. Everything was delicious and we left stuffed. The only problem was that where we were sitting (indoors) was infested with flies. At first there was just a couple but at one point we were swarmed with about 6 or 7 and they kept landing in our food, drinks, etc. We killed 2 or 3. Waiter told us it has been a problem but as soon as the sun goes down they would go away. By the end of our meal they had pretty much disappeared. Knowing this, we will return a bit later in the evening next year.

Really appreciate all your restaurant reviews. Our trip isn't until November but we're already working on the list. Yemanja is definitely on our list to try as we have never been. I'll try to remember to make our reservation a little later in the evening.

Glad you enjoyed Bavaria. I visited them back in June and it was a great experience.
