Everybody used to rave about it and now the reviews are mixed? I only went there once last year and had the almond grouper which was great. My Mom had the Coco Rasta Shrimp which were large and out of this world.
I know a lot of people on the forum love MJs but we tried it twice - I thought the first time might have just been a one-off (i.e. an off night) given all the raves that people give it. But the same thing happened the second time: terrible service... left waiting at the bar by an indifferent hostess, the waitress had an attitude of "I'd rather be anywhere than here" and just generally a poorly managed establishment. The meal was mediocre both times... lots of sauces to cover up tepid fish. And we kept having to flag the waitress down on both visits. I don't know if it's because we were a deuce and they focus on larger tables but it was weird that our experience was the same both times with the hostess and the waitress. We literally sat at the bar for an hour waiting for our table the first visit - no comp'd drinks, no apology. Just aggressive indifference. Same the second time but my spouse wanted to stick it out thinking the meal and meal service might offset our first opinion. I regret that I didn't insist we leave after the repeat of the table wait. We had a reservation both times. For the amount of money it costs to eat there, there are way better options on the island and people who are warm and friendly when greeting you.

But I'm just one opinion so weigh that against all the people that love it.

My spouse owes me dinner at Barefoot because of sticking it out for the second time at MJs. LOL

act1966, if I were you I would accept Kasi's offer. We've been to MJ at lease once per year for over a decade and have always left satisfied. We've had parties ranging from 2 to 10 persons with the same result each time.

    good luck!

    agree

    MJs is top notch.

Unfortunately...some/all places have an off night and some have many off nights.

Time and time again I have asked people that give a poor review if they contacted the manager on duty and explained their disstisfaction?
Often, once the manager is aware....corrections can be made.

Sometimes the waitstaff are not authorized to "fix and make things right"

and re: barefoot.................you WILL love it. (i think)

Barefoot is great unless there is live music next door, in which case it is intolerable. Call ahead, they're very very honest about it.

Totally agree with the music next door. We tried Barefoot this Spring. The service was excellent, the food was average, but the music along with the noise of people playing in the water not far from our table, ruined the ambiance. We usually go to Flying Fishbone since we always rent a car, but gave Barefoot a try after reading a few reviews. I must honestly say that there was no comparson to the Flying Fishbone. It's still our go to place when we want to dine and view the sunset.

It's tenderloin beef absolutely buried under onions, cheese, mushrooms and (I think) béarnaise sauce. Way too rich for me. I would ask for less sauce, or, on the side.

Burgerloin is a tenderloin that has been cut in half and filled with sautéed onions, mushrooms and cheese. Top it all off with Bernaise sauce. Very, very rich. It's my sister-in-laws favorite dish. I usually get the surf and turf but like their schnitzel as well. We have always been happy with MJ's and have never had inattentive service.
