    Sawasdee

My daughter heard that Sawasdee Thai restaurant had closed. I did a forum search and the last mention was some time ago. Does anyone know if it is still open? We found out the "quick" way to eat Thai was to order ahead and get it to go pick it up and take it back to the room. Although in house service was slow even by island standards, the food was really good.

I am always perplexed how these sort of rumors get started.

We have never been there, but am glad to see they are still open. AND they get decent reviews!

We loved this restaurant and avoided eating Thai food in Calgary just to have it when we were in Aruba. I am confused by the recent reviews though as we just got back from Aruba last night and they certainly are not in the location they have been in for the past few years (right next to the Bavarian beer place) Someone mentioned across from the Raddison? maybe they have moved? we didn't venture too much in to the hotel area. Will be interested to find out what is going on.

Thanks everyone. I agree, you hear such crazy stuff from time to time. Glad to see it is still open and can't wait to eat there in 54 days (give or take).

I just emailed Peter (owner) and received the following message from him:

Sawasdee Thai is still serving food, but main dining area is now outside in front of the restaurant. At restaurantsaruba.com you can see a picture. Inside we changed to a Sports Bar, as we did not get enough customers to fill the place. If somebody should prefer dining inside, we offer seating in the Sports Bar or next door in Bavaria.

I posted the photo below of their outside seating area:

That answers it then as we just did one quick drive by on this trip and saw a blue sign for a different place. Too bad we didn't realize they were there still as we would have gone. But glad to know they are so we can get our once a week movie and thai food fix over the winter.

Okay, I'm gonna add an update. Sawasdee Thai restaurant is now "Shoco Loco" which roughly translates to the "Crazy Owl". They still offer Thai food and as everyone in our group loves Thai and have ordered it in the past, we thought we would see if we could still order take out. We called and placed an order that cost near $100 and were told it would be ready in 30 minutes. We arrived about 25 minutes later and walked inside. OMG! The place has been transformed into something like I have never seen before. Sports Bar? I think not! Honest to God, there were hats hanging from the ceiling with male and female genitalia, drink specials including ###., Viagra shots, and a few others I won't mention. There were references to ladies breasts, mens parts and other things everywhere. I guess the owner's family was sitting at a table eating dinner when we walked in, and the rest of the place was empty. After we sat at the bar the owner(? it sure looked like the same guy from years past) came over, confirmed the call in order for take out we had placed 30 minutes earlier and said it would be about 15 minutes till our order was ready. I am just amazed that this was the condition of the place after the nice Thai decor that was there for years. As we waited, a local family came in and started shooting pool on the 2 tables that have been added. They ordered French fries and onion rings. We finally got our food and returned to the timeshare to eat. The food is still as good as ever, but I warn everyone who may be considering taking their family to eat there not to. You will be embarrassed if your children are younger than 18; I was feeling a bit uneasy just being there with my wife. Bottom line: the food is still really good for take out, but the interior is not suitable for anyone except frat boys during spring break. You can eat outside, but the amount of wind and dirt blowing across the parking lot is intense. Sports bar? I'm not sure what sports they were promoting, but most of them didn't seem like the ones on major TV channels. Amy, it looks to me like you may have gotten a PR statement, not the truth.

I'm sorry for the negative report of Shoco Loco or Sawasdee (and don't forget the food is still awesome), but I want everyone to know what has happened to this place. Andrea/Jacki, if you want to edit/censor or not post this, I certainly understand. Thanks,

    Walt

Thanks for the update! Sounds...uhhhh....interesting? I always thought their Thai food was pretty good when I needed a break for something different. Guess I will be doing take-out as well in the future since I'm not a frat boy.
