splitting the bill or 2 separate checks?

on one of the other aruba boards there is a thread about asking for separate checks for when more than 1 couple is dining together.

wondering what folk's opinions are re: asking the server for separate checks?

some restaurants say NO to separate checks
some oblige very willingly.

opinions?

I don;t see there being a problem to ask for a separate check. I'm pretty sure I have done so in Aruba previously. I don;t see why a restaurant even would deny such a request. if they do, oh well, it can always be settled among friends

When I was just in Aruba, I dined out many times with different friends. Every time I asked for separate checks. There was no problem doing this with any of the restuarants. I like separate checks as

1. I put my bill on a credit card so I can get air miles
2. Most importantly I don't want anyone to have to pay part of my bill. My bill is always more than anyone else I dine with. Either I order a extra wine, an appetizer or dessert when my dining partner doesn't.

I don't understand why some restaurants have a problem with separate checks.

Have never had a problem when asking for separate check. Also, makes it easy to figure out bill after a few drinks!

when we ate at pam pam 2 wks ago with friends, the server told us it was impossible to do separate checks.
(we think it had something to do with the computer/accounting program they used)

i remember once at madam janettes........a birthday party and there were 28 of us.... about 10 separate checks and boy, the wait staff great about it.

at buccaneer 2 weeks ago, there was a party of 4 seated near us and the server could not separate the checks. the folks were none too happy.

Should not be a problem anywhere as long as the server is told before he/she takes the order.

We travel with 20 or so to dinner sometimes. That involves 3-4 or even 5 families at times. Instead of driving the waither crazy we give each family a #. SO, the waiter says," family #1", and he takes that order....next, "Family #2", and so on and so forth...By the end he or she isn't srewed up, we all get the correct bill, and he's given a generous tip to compensate for his time and service to make this happen. Its worked like a charm..we explain in advance, and have never had a problem. The one place we expected a problem, El Guacho, wasn't....cindyo

I have not encountered a problem asking for separate checks. Actually I was at the Buccaneer about 2 weeks ago with a party of six and the waiter was quite happy to give us separate checks so maybe it depends on the waiter. I do like Cindyo's idea of using a # system for a larger group. How easy and will try it next time!!!!
