White Modern Cuisine - November 2016 (Part 1)

We loooooved "White Modern" when it was at the Palm Beach mall so we were a little trepidatious about the move to Gold Coast but rolled the dice on a whim and off we went.

First, you need to know where the clubhouse is - it's at the back of GoldCoast by the tennis courts. Like all things in Aruba, you just drive around and you'll eventually run into it.

They've done a beautiful job renovating the clubhouse and it's quite the spectacular entrance:

Beautfiul porcelain tile that looks like wood:

This is a shot of the bar from the back of the clubhouse (where we ate on the terrace that overlooks a salina):

Fans will be delighted to know that this also made the move (the house specialty Mango Mojhito with carrot foam):

    To be continued...

    Part 2....

The menu has changed a little bit so we ventured out in different ways. The Spouse raved about both his appetizer and main:

Duck breast with maple reduction dusted with dehydrated peanut butter (yes, you read that right) appetizer:

    Many moans an groans.

And for the main, what else? The rib eye - "The best rib eye I've had on the island" with mushroom sauce and fries:

I went for the five course taster menu to get a sample of various parts of the menu.

The first course was the avocado and quinoa salad which was wonderful:

Next up was an incredible encrusted tuna tartar with yam purée, mayo and various reductions:

    Part 3...

Next up was a great corn chowder - full chunks of corn, polenta purée and popcorn as garnish (yes, it sounds gross but, no, it was incredible with the mix of textures making the whole dish):

And then a pan grilled salmon course - now I didn't know the courses in advance so I couldn't specify that I like my fish a little undercooked so I found it a little dry BUT that's how most people like fish so no fault on the restaurant's part... it was served with pickled beets, steamed cauliflower, sweet potato purée and quinoa salad:

And then the dessert course - Arubans tend to like their sweets VERY sweet which I'm not a fan of soooo... not a favourite - it was a bunch of things that didn't really appeal to me:

One of the things we love the most about White Modern (and Kitchen Table) is Chef Urwin's commitment to training the next generation of chefs and restaurant staff - to the point where some of them go to Europe to study. He's definitely making a mark on Caribbean cuisine and we hope this model thrives for Aruba's culinary future.
