    Back in the day

I am an old gentleman now, (I like to refer to my self as a gentleman) but I was a youngster in my 30's when I had the good fortune to live and work in Aruba at what was then the Exxon Refinery. Supposedly the largest in the world back then. I lived in the colony at Baby Beach, and lunched at Charlie's Bar everyday, where our waiter was usually, Charlie himself. There was only 6 or 7 hotels back then and because the building boom was far away in the future, the wind blew relentlessly. If there were any mosquitoes, the wind sent them sailing past Aruba never to bother anyone, anytime. Goats roamed everywhere and left their little calling cards for us to step around. Incidentally, no one claimed ownership of the goats unless you bumped one with your car. Dogs and cats were everywhere too and we saw a cat give birth in the lobby of one of the hotels. We kept a running list with timetable to be sure we never missed any of the daily "Manager's Party's which took place every night at one hotel or another. One hour of free drinks, munchies, and live entertainment. Could anyplace try harder to win someone over?

Aruba was a less complicated place back then when I first fell under its spell, and now some 30 years later with all the new development, and the all the new visitors, I feel the same way about this island as that 30 something young man did that first week. I know you all know what I'm talking about.
