    First Trip

    Hello all,

I am taking my wife and two children (13 and 9) to Aruba for the first time! We leave on Sunday. We are excited, but I do have some pause.

A little background, we travel at least once a year, domestic and international, and live within 30 minutes of one of the largest cities in the US. So we are accustomed to the highlights and lowlights travel destinations bring.

I have researched as much as possible. We are staying at a rented condo at Eagle Beach, and are renting a car. Everything looks to be in place.

Of course, during my research, I keep coming upon more and more crime stats and concerns. With today's 24 hour news cycle and media, it is hard to discern how much of an issue it is. And to the point, I also looked at post in some forums that seemed to have the same concerns and reports 10 years ago, 5 years ago, etc.

This is board I believe to be the best out there, so I send this out to those in the know...how much is hype and how much is a true threat? Please don't take this as any disrespect, as I understand when a crime happens to YOU, it is deep violation that is a struggle to get past.

As mentioned, we are travel and city savvy, so the normal precautions are already ingrained in our actions.

Sorry to be a downer, but this has been weighing on me. I appreciate the time!

    Chris

I feel very safe In Aruba probably even more so than my own neighborhood at home. We have never had any incidents in our six trips. More the opposite, people go out of their way to be friendly and helpful.

welcome to the aruba.com community forum.

some of the other forums that you may have visited have little or no rule following.
i agree that this is the best aruba forum.
it has over 3500+ hits a day and usually over 100 member hits per day that check in and read, or read and post.

yes there is some crime on aruba.
but it is still quite minimal.

crime like jamaica? mexico? metropolitan cities in the usa? NO, not even close.

we have been visiting aruba for a long time. we see more police presence. we read of occasional car thefts, home robberies and most recently the bank and jewelry robberies. in both the armed robbery instances, the perps have been captured, arrested and are in jail waiting for the next step.

yes, you can buy marijuana and yes, you "might " be approached.
    but it is infrequent.

we still feel safe and expect we will always feel safe there.

so, moving forward........most of us with lots of aruba experience, have seen a change. the change with development and expansion brings some unsavory characters. the change with increased tourism brings more people and maybe they might be unsavory, the change with the economy in the dumpster til most recently maybe improving, will see some turning to a life of crime. young people emulating /gangsters they "wannabe" may or will turn to crime.

what i tell everyone is .......be as cautious as you would at home.
we constantly tell folks that aruba is wonderful and safe. it really is.

the aruba tourism authority and the police dept. and parliament and prime minister are working diligently to make things as perfect as possible not only for the tourists but for the residents as well.

    enjoy your visit!

eagle beach area is great. have fun exploring.

Frankly... with the normal precautions that you always take.... you will be fine.

Anyone that lives within 30 miles of ANY major US city probably has a stronger likelihood of crime touching their lives at home! Enjoy, stay safe and start planning the next trip!

seiing that you live in a big city, I'm sure you are well aware of what you can and can not do. it's the same in Aruba, just much less crime. Be aware of your surroundings and have loads of fun.

Crime exists everywhere. At least in Aruba, you are NOT cautioned to never leave the resort area or to stay in after dark.

We have been going to Aruba for 14 years and still feel safe there. I have heard of crime incidents but never witnessed any. Your experience may vary but chances are very good they won't.
