Cool On Our Way!! But Not Soon Enough!!!!

Hi I'm Doug and along with my much better half Marj will be heading for a week in Aruba from June 6 -13. This will be our second time, we had a cruise stop in 2012. We took a tour from DePalm during that stop and got a enough of an overview to place it on the exclusive list of islands to which we would like to return. We traded a week at our timeshare in the Poconos for a week at the Tropicana. We are aware that there are some negative reviews on Trip Advisor, however, every place we have traded for have had such reviews and we have had great luck so far. We are planning a week of relaxation and beach time and possibly exploring the half of the island we didn't see. I will try to talk my cautious wife into doing something adventurous. I will be celebrating my 64th birthday during the trip.

    Bon Dia Everyone!

welcome to the aruba.com community forum!

so many folks visit by cruise ship and then return for an aruba land based vacation!
i think you will be hooked!

the tropicana has had a difficult go of it from the day the cornerstone was laid. they were part of laCabana Beach and Racquet Club. They were somewhat the same but separate. They did not pull their fair share and things got ugly with management there vs the LaCabana. LaCabana was owed millions of $$$.
Eventually the courst settled the dilemma and the 2 were granted a "divorce so to speak". Then a group came in and bought the place and remaned it the Aruban. That was a nightmare from the getgo. More money wasted, promises to timeshare owners made and broken and more ugliness. Finally a group from Vegas bought the place at auction, and have been slowly but surely getting it back to tip top shape. The units are supposedly being renovated bit by bit. The pools are large and beautiful. The beach is a short 5 to 7 minute walk and I think they may even have a shuttle. Maybe someone can help out with that…is there a shuttle to beach? They have a small casino on property, a dunkin donuts and a pizza bob. i would not hesitate to stay there.

i bet your wife would love a sunset sail!

you and i share the same birthday month although i am just a few yrs younger…just a few…

Hi Doug! Welcome to the forum!

Tropicana is a fine place. I've stayed there a few times under a few different names. If you are expecting an incredibly luxurious place you may be a little disappointed. If you expecting to relax and just take it all in you will have a Grand time! A few years ago they did not offer a shuttle, but they did have a golf cart of sorts and the maintenance people where more than happy to drive my parents to the beach - of course this may have changed.

The pools are very nice, the bar is a fun time. Enjoy it!

Thanks for the welcome Andrea! The Tropicana in Aruba was acquired by the same group that purchased the Tropicana here in New Jersey. They are planning to revamp that property too. Sunset sail is a great idea, but not my idea of adventure. My idea of adventure is like the tour we took with DePalm bouncing about the east coast on an ATV ranging up to activities that end with "Thank God we survived!"

Hi Jacki and thanks for the welcome!!!! I see you are a fellow New Jersey resident. After our brutal winter I would stay in a shack on the beach if I had to. We go into our time share trades knowing that we will not be at the Ritz and are usually plesantly surprised. We traded for a week in Barbados and one in Oahu and both properties had their share of negative reviews but both were excellent accomodations. Turns out the negatives in Barbados were about buildings that were closed for rennovations. We have done well trading our humble timeshare in the Poconos! I think we can navigate the walk to the beach as both of my wonky knees have been repaired (not replaced).

We went on an ATV tour of the east coast from Casibari Rock to the late Natual Bridge then North to Alta Vista Chapel and California Lighthouse. The Natural Pool might make our "to do" list.

Welcome aboard. I am a few years older than you. You have to take some negative reviews with a grain of salt. Some are legitimate and some are just dumb. I once saw a negative review of the Divi Golf Links. This ladies 2 biggest complaints were that you had to take a golf cart to the beach or walk a quarter of a mile and that the swimming pool was NOT heated. I have never been cold in a pool in Aruba.
We will be at the Costa Linda the same week you are at the Trop. Let us know if you want to see it. Did your tour take you to Baby Beach? It is a great place to swim, snorkel and relax.

We are owners at the Trop. You will be pleased and anything that is not OK will be taken care of. You are close to a great grocery store and to several good restaurants within walking distance. Eagle Beach is the best!

Thanks for the welcome Arubabob and Marea. I have developed "Doug's Theory of Bad Reviews" over the years. One major malfunction and then all the minor stuff that may have gone unnoticed or ignored suddenly become major issues. If there is a problem during check-in and/or the front desk staff is having a bad day suddenly the tiny wine stain next to the couch becomes "the carpets were stained and worn", a couple of tiny hairs in the shower or a crumpled paper left in a waste basket becomes "the room was filthy and filled with garbage." I have read reviews from others on the same cruise I was on and wondered if they really were on the same ship as us. A good example was our tour with DePalm on ATVs. We loved the tour and our crazy funny guide, it was bumpy, dusty, a great overview of Aruba and 100% fun. Others complained it was bumpy and dusty and the sights were boring. Did they read the description? Did they realize that 4WD=Bumpy? Apparantly not. We only got to see sights on the north part of the island. Places south of Oranjested such as Natural Pool and Baby Beach remained to be explored.
