Another Great Relaxing Trip at Divi AI Nov 28-Dec 7

Another great trip to Aruba and Divi AI. Arrived on turkey day, almost did not make itdue to some stomach pain which has been ongoing since summer but willed myselfwell enough to fly and glad I did. Flight out of BDL was fine, had only 50 mins.To connect in Charlotte which usually is not a problem, however, not sure ifany other airlines other than USAir do this but we always have to “pre-screen”at a separate counter in Charlotte before we board. This line was crazy long with only one personworking it and it was not moving! I paidextra $$$ for our seats to have zone 2 boarding it did not matter at this pointbut at least we still found overhead storage or I would have been upset. No time to grab a sandwich like we usually doin Charlotte so just boarded our plane. Sat on tarmac for 1 ½ hrs because some maintenance had been done andthere was a “misunderstanding” and the paperwork was never delivered topilot! At first they told us it would bea half hour, it turned into 1 ½ hrs. a lot of unhappy campers at this point, wewere hoping they would at least give us a complimentary cocktail but of coursethat would be asking too much (lol)…..come time to purchase meals, they onlyhad a few. I never understand this theyknow how many people are on the flight and they only have a dozen or so mealsto go around? One of the flightattendants on this plane was having a meltdown, guess she does not usually dointernational, and was having issues with a passenger who was buying a ton ofitems off the duty free cart, at one point the flight attendant told the otherflight attendant she was about to “blow a gasket” not too professional to sayout loud if you ask me. I felt bad forBully meeting us at the airport as we were so late arriving but of course hewas as nice and understanding as always.
The first 3 days Ihad to take it easy so no morning beach walks or ocean but each day I was alittle better. Come Monday I was my oldself again and ready to party, swim, walk it you name it I was ready!
Divi AI has 2 vista ocean view buildings; I always stay inVista 1. Vista 2 is being renovated andall rooms (51 total) were closed when we arrived. This had some people staying in other partsbecause of the number of Vista rooms down. During our stay they slowly opened up some of the bottom Vista 2rooms. We peeked in to check out therenovations, nice new bathroom countertops, sinks, vanity, shelves etc. Weeven saw them bring in new furniture. Atthe front of Vista 2 they are making acouple new huge suites with huge windows overlooking the ocean. I believe they will have all of Vista 2opened by the 20th of this month. I hear Vista 1 is next, hopefully will be done by our next trip a yearfrom now. I would guess they will putoff the start of this bldg. until after high season is over?
Monday afternoon we took a taxi to high rise section for ourannual bucket of Brights at the Pelican NestPier bar near Holiday Inn. I wore my RedSox custom made “ Bogaerts” shirt and all the waiters and locals everywhere Iwent loved, loved, loved it! The waiterat the pier bar told me I missed Bogaerts by 2 days, Saturday he was playingvolleyball with his cousin at the Holiday Inn!!!!! If I was not sick I would have been theremost likely that day, poor me L So I did the next best thing and crossed thestreet to see Xander’s star on the walk of fame, took my picture with his star J After that we walked the beach to theMarriott casino to meet my friend’s so called honey who works there and had ourpicture taken with her. After that wechecked out the Ritz Carlton but just went into lobby and casino to buy acouple of poker chips. Very quiet in thecasino and lobby seemed like most of the people were just checking it out.
Can’t remember what we did on each specific day but here isa little of it all. Went to watch sunsetat Bunker Bar always a good time. Oneevening we went to LG Smith’s for dinner, had a great waiter namedWashington. I had the 6 oz filet withmashed potatoes and mushrooms and an appetizer portabella mushroom stuffed withgoat cheese. Hubby had lobsterthermadore (not sure of spelling) but both meals were very good and service wasgreat! Went to Paddock for a Bright, walked the marina boardwalk as always to check out the beautiful boats. There is a new restaurant (I think it is new)next to Paddock across from LG Smith’s it is so beautiful from the outside, itlooks like white lace lattice, inside red chandeliers and pastel colored high backchairs. Next to that is a little bakeryand/or ice cream spot with 2 swings outside, so quaint and cute!
Spent most days relaxing and working on my tan, swims in theocean some fun waves. At night enjoyedthe shows at Divi and caught up with lots of friends we have met over theyears. I love meeting our old friendssome are Barbara, Ed, Scott, Bob, Sheila from the Bronx. A couple I loved back in 2009 who are in theocean almost all day long I ran into, they haven’t been back the same weeksince, I knew they were arriving one year the day we left so I left them a Xmaspresent of Boca Clilps for their towels. I thought I saw them this week but it has been so long wasn’t sure untilI saw the clips I gifted them on their chairs, it was great seeing themagain! Evelyn & Jim fromBoston. New friends we met a honeymooncouple Julie & Pete from Illinois, they are going to try to return sametime next year. It is wonderful how thewaiters, bar staff all hug you and welcomes you back! Thelmathe nice lady at the pizza bar was out sick the entire time I was there I prayit is nothing serious she is such a sweetheart.
Food at Divi AL: breakfast always yummy as I treat myself once a year to daily eggsbenedict. Lunch I enjoy the Divi’s saladbar very fresh and lots of variety, new this year a pasta bar where they makeyour pasta anyway you like it. Dinner,“so, so” some nights very good, others not so much. Never go hungry either way as you can alwaysgrab a pizza or sandwich and more variety there as well. The buffet restaurant has been re-done and isBEAUTIFUL, much larger, new furniture inside and out and much more organizedand room to move around an excellent job. The waiter told us this buffet restaurant used to sit 60 now sits120. This is one thing I love about theDivi AL they have been constantly renovating different rooms and adding newthings over the last few years. It isnice to know your money is being spent making the resort nicer.
Weather: Can I sayPERFECT!!!!! I believe it may haverained one night out of our 10 nights as I did see a puddle on my morning walkto Dunkin Donuts. Other than that, notone drop. One day not too much of abreeze but other days very breezy, always different. Water was always fun, waves not too big to knockyou down but big enough to have fun.
Didn’t see too many diving pelicans this year which wasweird. Did hear tons of tropical birdssinging each morning which was very nice. It is funny how one year to another things change, some years you seetons of iguanas some not too many etc.
Very relaxing vacation this year more or less stayed putwhich my husband enjoyed. It gets harderand harder every year to leave, my eyes started watering up at breakfast whenthe waiters and cooks were saying good bye to us until next year. Dave the singing waiter gave us a good byeblessing which I will never forget that one really got me. I cannot say enough about the Divi staff allaround from housekeeping, bartenders, waiters they really do treat you sospecial and welcome you back and when saying good bye tell you they will seeyou next year. Bully picked us up alittle before 10 am for our 2:30 flight, we have never made it thru customs andall the screenings so fast. We usuallyhave to wait until they open us the doors right after the duty free storesdownstairs, this year it was open! Wedid get stopped for a quick interview by a customs agent he explained he had tochoose people every hour or so, he was very nice and it went pretty quick. I would not want to be pulled out of the linehowever if we were running late that could have been stressful. Lesson learned, always go early. Bought some cheese upstairs to bring home asit is the best I’ve ever had and it reminds me of Aruba with every littlebite. We did take advantage of the CyberMonday 50% sale and booked our room for next year. Quite a few people seemed to know about thisand were spreading the word. Back toreality, getting snow here tomorrow but countdown already in progress for Aruba2014!!!!

Glad you had such a great trip AND got to take advantage of the sale. I was wondering how the Pelican Terrace was going to look. When we were there in May they were just beginning renovations. Did you really have the eggs Benedict everyday day? I always get it at least once. Did you go to the Red Parrot at all? On our last trip they had changed the menu some and the new desserts were quite good. I really missed being there this year!!

Hi Peg - missed you this year hopefully next year! Yes I always get my eggs benedict everyday, only time and place I ever get it so really enjoy it. No one makes it perfect everytime like the lady at Pelican terrace, she sees me walk in and starts making it for me, I love her and she really spoils me :-) No we usually do the buffet as it is quick and easy so we did not do Red Parrot, our friends did and enjoyed it. The waiter at Pelican Terrace told us the renovations were completed only a month ago so it was really new and beautiful. Guess while undergoing the renovations they had portions of it open and other portions closed off. You will really love it when you see it, great improvement.

    Hi DiviFan:
I must say, your story brought tears of joy and happiness to me. Reading about your days almost put me back on the Divi Beach.

We've been to Aruba 3 times, staying at Holiday Inn (2003), La Cabana (as a guest with AI package) (2005), and Divi Aruba AI (2008).
After our last trip to the Divi, we haven't been anywhere else due to running our own business.

Without question, my favourite stay was at Divi, and would be back there in a heartbeat, if it was up to me. The beach, food, drinks and staff were all amazing. My wife didn't really like the rooms, which were adequate, but truthfully could have used an update, but in reality, how much time do you spend in them anyway.

From what I've read on TripAdvisor, the renovations have been going well, and accomodations are much better now, and am happy to read your confirmation of this.

We're in Canada - (yes, snow, ice and sleet here is getting a little out of hand), and one of our favourite steak houses is a chain called The Keg - always a consistently great steak. We found the steak served at The Red Parrot Parrot rivaled that of The Keg, and that's saying a lot.

There are just so many good things about Aruba, that I'd move there permanently, but my wife thinks the island is too small for that. I'd contradict her, but that would just lessen my lifespan, so no need to go there ......

Anyway, thanks again for your story, and brightening my day. Hopefully we'll get back there one day SOON, maybe get to share a drink with you.

    Hi Divifan,
Greetings from Trinidad and Tobago, thanks for your post on your last trip. It really helps a lot of us who love, appreciate and miss Aruba keep in touch somehow. I know that I live in the Caribbean and its always warm and I live in the part where we get a healthy dose of rain during the rainy season, but still I long to be back on Aruba every chance that I get. What I LOVE the most about Aruba is how much it reminds me of the island where I was born and raised for a few years, Tobago. Which interestingly enough once had something in common with Aruba, it was originally a Dutch colony. Till the French and then the British finally added it to the Empire. Looking at Aruba it makes me wonder what Tobago would have been like if it had remained a Dutch colony?? Sounds like an Alternate History story somewhere there....BTW..I am an aspiring writer hoping to make it a full time career, that way I can move to Aruba on a more permanent basis and support myself through my writing.

Once again, thanks for posting, hope that all is well with you and yours!! Take Care!!
    Val
