    August 24-31

    Greetings from sunny Aruba!

We arrived before noon on Saturday morning after an uneventful flight. The luggage came up quickly and we were out of the airport. This year we rented from Econo. There are six of us and we needed a van. By far, this is the nicest vehicle we have ever rented here in Aruba. It's clean, dent-free, a/c works well, has power windows and great pick-up. We got to the Surf Club to check in. For the first time in seven years, our room was ready early. We dropped off our bags and headed to lunch. We were trying to find a place on Eagle Beach that I read about on the Dion's report recently, but I couldn't find it. We went to Buster's Garage instead and it was good. Very friendly staff and lots of sports on TV. After lunch, we went back to the Surf Club, unpacked and relaxed before getting ready for dinner.

Dinner was at Gasparito. Everyone loved it. Mr. Barros is a very engaging and entertaining host. Cocktails back at the SC and then off to bed.

Day two. We were all up early. Golf for the guys and diving for me. The other ladies got a palapa and went to the beach. There was a tournament at Tierra del Sol, so the golfers went to The Links at Divi. Consensus was that it just ok, but these guys are SERIOUS golfers. They are looking forward to TdS tomorrow. I dove with the nice people at JADS again. It was a great day. I met a nice family from the Boston area and my dive buddy was a trauma surgeon from Brazil. We had four dive masters for 7 divers. This makes for a very safe and comforting dive experience. After the first dive, we were boarded by the Aruba Coast Guard. This was a very serious looking and intimidating group. They don't smile much. They gave the whole boat the once-over and checked all of the paperwork and the safety equipment and we passed with flying colors. We were not singled-out, BTW, they were boarding every boat who in the vicinity. We did two drift dives. The visibility was great and we saw lots of fish and several squid. No turtles today, though. Maybe next time.

After diving and golf, we joined the other ladies at the beach. We decided on lunch at Hadicurari. Everyone was pleased with their food and the service was good. In front of Moomba, there was a large stage set up with a DJ . Aruba Summer Splash was in full swing. The music was VERY loud but people looked like they were having fun. Not my kind of music, but it made for a festive atmosphere.

Dinner was at Ike's Bistro at Manchebo. Everyone agreed that the food and atmosphere were excellent, but the service was not too good. It was exceptionally slow, even by island standards. In addition, they brought me the wrong meal...twice! The table next to us arrived after us and were finished well before we were.

Overall, things seem quieter here than I am used to. When you stay at the Surf Club, this is a really good thing. Pool and beach chairs seem plentiful.

    Time to start day 3!

Andrea, we found it comfortable at Ike's. We sat by the pool and the breeze was perfect. I would definitely consider going back. Sometimes service is off a bit. Maybe our waiter was new. If the food and the service were both lacking, we would cross them off the list.

    Day 3.

We spent the morning at the beach relaxing. For the afternoon, we all had massages at Okeanos spa at the Rennaisance Hotel. Everyone loved it. Drinks after at the pool bar. We showered and dressed at the hotel and had dinner at Cubas Cookin' which is right across the street. Everyone really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. There was live music and our waitress even took my husband out for a spin on the dance floor. Our friend who is with us is Cuban and he gave the food his stamp of approval. After dinner we went back to the Surf Club and played Catch Phrase, drank and laughed. A lot.

    that's terrific.
my husband had a terrific massage there in May when his lower back was giving him trouble. (which is always)
his review was similar to yours!

isn't "cuba's cookin" a blast? we love it there and the music is excellent.

continue to have fun and again, thanks for "your story"

Interesting about the service at Ike's. Were you able to bring it to the attention of management?

The reason I ask is that we once had a disappointing server at one of our favorite restaurants. He was new but even so stumbled and fumbled over everything.

The next day I emailed the manager and told him that though it did not ruin our dinner, I thought he might like to know what happened.

I received a very nice reply that he appreciated the feedback and that the waiter would be re-trained. This occurred a few years ago and I am happy to report that the waiter is still working at this restaurant.

Love reading trip reports and keeping notes for the next trip, especially for restaurants. Service seems to be a common issue at Ike's bistro although people seem to like the food.

I just typed for an hour and it all disappeared. Sigh.
