    DAH13 Trip Report 4-16 to 4-24-2015

We are finally back! We haven't been since 2012 so it really is great to return for trip number 8.

The flight from Cleveland, OH through Chicago was uneventful except for some moderate turbulence. I decided that I was growing rather unhappy with one of the local car rental companies so decided to try a new one and went with Wheels2Go Aruba. Ricky the owner is wonderful and was waiting for us at the airport with our car parked in the lot out front. He is very personable and professional. He even helped us with our bags even though I tried to tell him that carting our luggage wasn't in his job description, lol. After leaving the airport we headed for Ling and Sons for our usual stockpile of Gouda cheese, Douwe Egberts coffee, and Arizona Iced Teas.

From there we headed to the Renaissance Ocean Suites to check in. We don't own there and have always had one of the hotel suites. While I like the clean look of the room renovations I find the furniture rather stiff and uncomfortable. I wonder how well the light colors are going to hold up because some of the beige /taupe areas of the carpet were already stained. Quite a bit of the drywall in the hallways is already damaged. Here is a link to photos of the room. Please let me know if they can't be viewed and I will change my privacy settings. https://www.facebook.com/denise.hata...7282700&type=3. Oh, and I hate the little pod coffee makers so much (can't have our Douwe Egberts) that I brought a little 5 cup coffee maker like they used to have in the rooms. Found it at Walmart for $15.

From there we headed to Iguana Joe's for our usual first night meal. There are two cruise ships in and the downtown area was crawling with tourists. There seems to be a bit of an upswing since 2012 and this is good. There is also a US Coast Guard ship in port and I am dying to know what it is doing here.

P.S. We also received an emailed postcard from our two dogs who are being boarded. Too cute not to share!

I couldn't agree more with both of your comments cindyo and Andrea J. The place certainly did need a face lift and it is clean and bright now and everything functions well now (sinks, air handling, etc.). Having said that, the first thing I did was to stub my toe on the table that is in the middle of the room. Needless to say, it now sits up against one of the walls, lol!

We spent the day at Renaissance Island and you were so right cindyo about the updates to the Papagayo restaurant. The place looks great and it was really smart of them to move the bar over to the area of the restaurant that used to be quite dead. We ate around 1:30 and the place was packed. We tried the pizza based on your recommendation and were not disappointed! We got the Papagayo special which has shrimp, calamari and mussels and loved it! Thank you!

We had reservations at Que Pasa for dinner and were disappointed to find that they now close off the upper open-air floor when not in high season. This never used to be the case and since we really wanted to eat outside we left and were happy that Yemania could accommodate us in their outdoor patio. We eat early for a lot of people and it got really busy towards the end of our meal so I am glad they could take us. As usual, the meal did not disappoint us and if I get a spare minute I will try to post some food photos in the culinary section. Yemania is one of our favorites.

The updates to the Renaissance mall and the Seaport mall are very nice and there seems to be more traffic through both.

Cindyo, we are taking your suggestion and booking a reservation at Quinta Del Carmen for my birthday dinner. I am sure that I will love based on what you and others have posted.

I changed the security settings so that it would work for sure ace2063. The rooms do seem more spacious since the renovations and we love that too.

I am not going to bore anyone with a report from yesterday (4-18) because we pretty much fall into a routine of sleep, Renaissance private island, eat, and about an hour in a casino. We drove to the high rise area and ate at one of our staples, Smokey Joes. In case folks don't know, there is a small gated parking lot which belongs to the Playa Linda and can be used by several of the vendors nearby and Smokey Joes is one of them. Just hand your ticket to the host or hostess and they will give you a token to get out of the lot. Food was plenty and good as usual. Walked around the area after dinner, lost a few bucks at the Hyatt, drove back downtown and walked over to West Deck to check it out for Sunday's dinner. Will post a review with photos after that meal in the culinary section.

Sorry folks. I fell into Aruban time, was enjoying myself too much and fell far behind on my trip report. We are home now and I hope that I can get caught up bit by bit so please bear with me.

Sunday was just another wonderful day at the private island and dinner at the West Deck. I did manage to post a review of West Deck in the culinary section which most of you have already seen.

Monday we went to Philip's Animal Garden after hearing so many nice things about it and the work that has been done. This is not a zoo but rather a sanctuary for injured or unwanted animals in Aruba. Unfortunately, Venezuela is only 15 miles away from Aruba and many animals are smuggled into this country from Venezuela and then abandoned when they are no longer cute and cuddly or when they become too difficult to care for. There were also ocelots, huge constrictors, monkeys and other animals that I did not get photos of because their enclosures weren't conducive to good pics. I am glad that this gentleman has a kind heart and started this sanctuary out of his own funds. He even takes unwanted litters of kittens and re-homes them. Here is the link to my FB photos: https://www.facebook.com/denise.hata...7282700&type=3

Even though this was our 8th trip and we have taken jeep tours, we have actually never been to the Alto Vista Chapel. It is right around the corner (literally) from Philip's Animal Garden so we went to see that also.

After that it was lunch at Burgers and Burgers at the Playa Linda and a lighter dinner at Iguana Joe's downtown in the evening.
