    Day 1

Arrived yesterday JFK-AUA at 1:00, and this is the first time this has ever happened to us...we were last to get off the plane, only one person in front of us at customs, and by the time we got our luggage, we were out of the airport at 1:15! In all of our trips here we've never gotten out that fast, especially on a Saturday! After renting the car at the airport we were at the Ocean Club by 2, and our room was ready! Another first! Hopefully the rest of our week is this great

Finally got a minute to sit for a few minutes and finish my story. To most of you, I'm sure this will be very boring. Dh and I travelled alone this year as our friends had to cancel at the last minute. I'm sorry they cancelled because we love them to death, but I have to tell you...this was the best, most relaxing vacation we've ever been on. It was our 29th wedding anniversary, and I'm kind of glad it was just the two of us. We really had a wonderful time. Like I said, arrival was a breeze, and we rented a car at the airport from Hertz as our son works for them and we get a nice discount. That went very smooth, the Hertz employees were very nice and the car was in very good condition. Check in at Marriott Ocean Club was quick and we had a very nice 1 bedroom overlooking the iguana sanctuary, with a great ocean view. Very happy with the room, and the warm welcome we received.
Like I said, this may be a bit boring, but every day was almost the same routine for us. We went to Malmok every morning snorkeling. Dh bought me an underwater camera, and I got some great shots. Not really sure how to add them here, but I'll try. We said we weren't going to leave the island until we saw a turtle, and although we're home, we never saw one. Is there any place on the island that we'd have a better chance of seeing them? If there is, we'll go there next year. We went back and spent every afternoon at the pool and beach. There were plenty of palapas and pool chairs available. Spent a few afternoons at the Stellaris pool, that's a nice pool. Walked up and down Palm Beach. Holiday Inn is undergoing a lot of changes by the pool. I see they have a new (adult only?) pool with cabanas that looked nice. As far as meals go, we wanted to try places that we haven't been before, and I will say we tried Tulips....turned out it was the best meal we had while there!!! Our waiter was probably the best one we've ever had, and the food was outstanding! I had the grouper special, and dh beef stroganoff which he said was terrific.
Portions were huge, and the price was very reasonable. Probably our least favorite meal was Hadicurrari (sp?) My grilled wahoo was so dry and rubbery I couldn't finish it. But the view was spectacular! Salt and Pepper was great, Wacky Wahoos was great as usual.
Did our food shopping at Ling and Sons, but during the week I needed to pick up one thing, so I went to Superfoods. Love that store!!! It was well stocked, and very nice!
Did very little gambling, and I'll tell you why. I set aside a little (very little!) money to gamble with each day. We went to the Stellaris one of the first nights there. I sat at the bar to play video poker. I put $20 in the machine, hit deal, and on the first hand, I was dealt four Aces and a four! I won $320.25. I hit cash out but the ticket never came out!!!! The bar tender called someone, and he opened the machine, but couldn't find the ticket! I was a little nervous like he would say "sorry without the ticket, nothing can be done". I sat down at the bar stool, and was low enough to notice the ticket was stuck under the cover, so all was good. I'm not much of a gambler, so I took the money and ran!!!!! Never went back!!
Spent a little time at Eagle beach, and I think I'd like to stay there next year!! Very different than Palm Beach and I think it's more of what I'd like! Maybe we'll give it a try next year.
Left on Saturday 9/28. Flight was at 12:30, so we left our room at 9am. We were at our gate by 10:30. Customs was no problem.
Loved this trip, it was our best so far!

thank you so much for the final chapter(s)

how fortunate indeed to find that ticket for the $$$

i suggest eagle beach and maybe a 1 bedroom unit at aruba beach club......check into renting a timeshare there.
very very low key, laid back and it is practically fall out your door onto the beach. also too the manchebo resort...or the bucuti which is awesome!

the only place that we have seen turtles while snorkeling in aruba has been at catalina cove.
unfortunately have not seen one in probably 8 or 10 yrs

glad to hear that Tulip restaurant was terrific.
my husband loves their mixed grill and i love their chicken sate' and their salads are very good.
it is a very pretty and quiet spot.
it is decorated simply and nicely!

    thanks so much for sharing.

    Never boring reading about Aruba.

I have to ask what an iguana sanctuary is.

Great to hear this! Just one of the reasons why we chose the all inclusive package at their sister Amsterdam Manor.

the ocean club , has an area set aside where there are iguanas.
i think that the staff feed them lettuce and is a great photo spot place.

That's right, Andrea, there is a large area between the Ocean and Surf Clubs with large boulders where at 10 am everyday staff members come out with buckets of lettuce. They teach guests about the iguanas and let guests feed them. They drew quite a large crowd every morning. I find it amusing that about 9:45 every morning several iguanas gather on the rocks and wait. It's like they know! A few of the days while we were at the pool about 3 pm, staff came with a net and caught some of them and put them in a cage. They said they get too numerous. They let them go by the sanctuary. Boy can they run fast when the net comes out!!
