Doug and Marj's Excellent Adventure (6/6/ to 6/13)
Day 1- Our United flight out of Newark arrived in Aruba on time which is a plus after five hours crammed in steerage. Immigration was a breeze, we followed a tip from an Aruba veteran and stood in the line farthest to the right, because the agent in the line for air crews, etc. will call over people from that line if he/she has no one in her line. Next was baggage claim and a quick look at the duty free store, found nothing of interest, and proceeded through customs to the taxi stand. The lines seem immense, but move quickly. You tell the dispatcher where you are going and you are given a slip of paper with the correct fare. The paper also has examples of the official fares for other destinations and is a handy reference to keep in your wallet.
Our taxi driver, Rocky, took us on a rather high speed drive through downtown Orangestad but got us to the Tropicana safely. We checked in and got a very clean and comfortable suite with a small kitchen with a refrigerator, two burner stove, microwave and toaster.
The weather was very windy with at least one passing shower. We walked over to Superfoods and were impressed with how clean and modern the store is. Got enough to stock the pantry for a few days, however we opted for dinner at Pizza Bobs and had a very good thin crust veggie pizza. After dinner we wandered over to the deserted Tropicana Casino, which honestly looks like a casino sitting inside of a fire or union hall. We then wandered over to Eagle Beach and back to the Trop through La Cabana were we found the Glitz Casino to be crowded almost to the bursting point. What a contrast! End of Day 1!
Day 2 - Today I turned 64 (cue the Beatles song ). Had breakfast and coffee on our patio followed by Eagle Beach, a slide down the water slide at our pool on a dare and a quiet dinner in our condo with an awesome chocolate mocha cream cake from Superfoods. Spent the evening wandering about exploring the area.
stick with me folks, the pace will be picking up soon.
