    Dylan's Do Over Feb 3-10

    Hello!
I know this is a bit belated but we moved from CT to Maine about 4 days after we came back from our trip so it's been crazy to say the least!

I wrote the whole report over the last hour and when I went to post, the internet went out. We have the worst internet here in Maine I've found! I will write it in word in cut and paste later on.

The long and short of it, we had a fantastic time!

    More to come!!

(i apologize for going even more off topic)...the aruba tourism authority, in june, hired "the concept farm" in NY as their new advertising agency.they have developed a new marketing campaign and will release that when they release the new website aruba.com. hopefully in late march or april.
the forum will not have any changes for the members.
google "the concept farm" to see their list of clients. wow. (espn, wendys, bny mellon, estee lauder, msnbc and many more)

now back to melissa and dylan's do over.

    Ok, let’s try this again!!

Left Boston pretty much on time after some de-icing while on the actual plane. Something I hadn’t experienced before. Smooth flight into Aruba for the most part. Traveling with a two year old comes with its own set of challenges but there were plenty of hands to pass him around to. Stepped right up to customs, some confusion about where to pick up our stroller and off we went to the Ocean Club. Since it was Sunday and the stores were closed, we ate our traditional welcome dinner at Champions. We were all so tired I think anything would have been just fine. Early to bed that night but not after a quick happy hour. I think it wasn’t even 9 o’clock and everyone was sound asleep.
My sister so graciously offered to get up before the sun to wait in line for the palapa. Ah, the joys of the Marriott. Spent the day at the beach and since our hut was in front of the juice bar with the large ice cream cone statue, Dylan was all about that!! Every day it was “ice cream cone!” Of course who could deny a 2 yr old an ice cream cone?? : ) We at least got him to wait until after lunch.
Most of our meals were in our room since it can get pricey eating out for 7 and challenging with a toddler. My husband and stepdad went shopping on Monday to get our provisions for the week. Turned my mom onto my drink of choice on this trip, captain and diet. She liked it and probably had more of the bottle than I did!
As the week went on we noticed a problem with Dylan’s ear. After consulting with an audiologist friend of mine via email, we decided it would be best to see Dr. Habibe again this year. Amazing staff and physician. Got Dylan all set up with antibiotics and we were on our way in no time. The price did increase from $50 last year to $80 this year. To us it was worth it to get Dylan feeling better. Next time, I travel with a small pharmacy!!! We convinced my parents to join us at the Donkey Sanctuary that day after seeing the doctor. Apples & carrots in hand, we learned from last years’ experience and waited until we were all the way through to start feeding them. Everyone had a great time! My husband has a way with animals and really seems to enjoy spending time there. Boca Prins for lunch and back to the hotel for you guessed it, happy hour!!
One day we rented snorkel equipment and my husband, sister and future brother in law and I went to Mangel Halto to snorkel. We went there with Stuart last year and absolutely loved it so decided to go on our own this time. We had a great time and saw the largest sea urchins I have ever seen! Zeerovers for lunch, fantastic as always! I think that Boca Prins, Zeerovers and Mangel Halto are easily my favorite places on Earth. The views, spectacular. The atmosphere, relaxing. There is NOTHING better than that.
Dinner that night was Casa Tua with my family and aunt & uncle who have a home on the island. We catch up with them during our trip each year. My uncle, who is 72 years young, bikes on the island every day. He wore my brother in law OUT who is 30 biking with him on this trip. God bless him!!!

I had a relaxing spa treatment on Saturday morning which was my birthday present from my husband. I spent most of that day after drinking and relaxing in the sun…until…we decided to rent jet skis. My husband and I had done it before but my sister and brother in law hadn’t. They really enjoyed it and no one got dumped off!! We saw a sea turtle and that made my week!
Our last night we went to The Buccaneer restaurant. Now, I didn’t choose it for its fantastic food. I chose it because I heard it was family friendly and had the fish tanks therefore I figured it would be cool for Dylan. It was kind of deserted, no one really liked their food and the ambiance wore off after a while. Lesson learned.
While we were in Aruba, we had heard about the blizzard that was looming over New England. I had said to my husband that we should book a hotel room in Baltimore (where we had a layover on Sunday) just to be safe. My stepdad assured us that we would make it home just fine, nothing to worry about. I was skeptical, but took him at his word. Mother’s intuition be damned.
On our way to the airport, we still had some time so we decided to go over near the lighthouse and explore. Well, I should rephrase that, my stepdad decided we should explore near the shore. We were in a9 passenger van packed with luggage. We found a nice spot, parked and walked. Took some pictures and got back in the van, um, nope. It was stuck in the sand. After some shoveling, swearing and sweating, the guys got us unstuck at the cost of one rubber floor mat and off to the airport we went.
Everything at the airport went fine, got on the plane and off to Baltimore we went. I said to Chris (my husband) “well we must be ok for our connection or they would have said something. “ Oh, how naïve I was-maybe it was wishful thinking. Touchdown for our 3 hour layover, get some dinner and settle in at the gate to wait it out. About 9 pm the crew gets on the speaker and says the flight has been delayed, an unknown amount of time. Ok, I can handle that. Five minutes later, its 45 minutes delayed. Less than five minutes later, it CANCELLED. Yup! I’m in the airport, 9 o’clock at night, with a 2 yr old. Thank God for iPhones. While my sister waited in line to rebook us, I booked us a hotel, my brother in law entertained Dylan and Chris devised a backup plan in case we couldn’t get to Boston the next day. Oye.
All in all, we made it to Boston early the next day and everyone was exhausted from nearly 24 hrs of traveling. Dylan took it all in stride and we are very lucky he was such a good little traveler-my boy for sure! That will teach them not to wave off my mother’s intuition!

    thanks
i a glad that you found the time to post

i am so sorry to hear that your dinner at the "buccaneer" was not great/good.
i am one that always recommends the place as the ambience/atmosphere is terrific for a family and the food (our experiences) has always been delicious. i apologize.
we have dined there probably 15 times in almost 40 visits and have not been disappointed. again, sorry

glad that dr habibe was able to fix dylan right up!!
this was his first ear infect in a long time right?
go figure it had to happen in aruba.

what royal pain in the rump with the flight being cancelled and the hassle.

thank you so much for your terrific report and thank you so much for making the time to post!!

Us "kids" like the food. The parental units are a bit more difficult to please. No worries!!!

I think what happened with Dylan's ear was that the fluid was already in there but the pressure from the flight forced it thru the tube and it got infected. Gross, sorry. He was a star patient and we made Dr. Habibe laugh when we told him we were there last year, same time, for the same thing.

Getting ready here in Southeastern Maine for another whopper of a snowstorm. Will it be 5 inches or 12? who can tell??!!
