March 22-Apr12: rp-umpire's 23rd and longest visit to Aruba

I was going to begin this thread yesterday, upon my arrival in Aruba, but my internet connection at La Cabana has been spotty at best.

It is noteworthy that I am at La Cabana on my 23rd visit to Aruba. My first visit, back in 1989, featured a stay at the Holiday Inn. Since then, it has been 21 consectuive stays at Playa Linda. My weeks 13 and 14 stays at Playa Linda follow my stay here at La Cabana.

As my internet connection allows -- (I can't even use Skype, so my roaming bill on my phone is going to be an unexpected expense.)

More posts to be added, hopefully very soon (fingers crossed).

Internet at La Cabana is so bad that I bought a 3 week Playa Linda internet package so I at least had a good phone wifi when I am by there. Did I mention 21 previous visits to Playa Linda? I spent pretty much all day in that Palm Beach area there catching up with old friends.

I think my trip report will have a series of short snippets and occasional longer bursts, as long as internet allows.
    '
I arrived Sunday afternoon. Amazingly quick in and out of the airport -- once we got the jetway up to the plane's doors. Talk about an excruciating 15 minutes. Imagine pulling up to gate after arriving in Aruba and they don't open the plane's doors for 15 minutes!
Only a handful of people in line at immigration, and luggage was already arriving on the carousel upon arriving there.

I rented a car from Royal for this week, then a two-week rental coming up with Tropic. Hans didn't have a car available after I added this Aruba week at La Cabana.

The reason I added this week is because I retired last Friday (3/20). I was due for my usual weeks 13 & 14, but I thought what would be better than being in Aruba 9 days after retirement, than 2 days after retirement?

    More to come......

La Cabana check-in was quick and easy. My luggage -- two checked bags and a carry-on (more on that later) -- and I made it to the room. I got half-assed unpacked and set off to explore the resort for a bit and take a dip in the pool. I grabbed a quick carry-away for dinner at sbarro (at the pool's edge).

I ate, got cleaned up, and then spent the rest of the night at the Glitz Casino on site. I played some video poker and contributed. I played some blackjack and contributed. I was about to call it a night, but decided to play some more video poker. Won a bit, then hit two 4-of-a-kinds for a nice infusion of cash that gave me a "second wind". That second wind turned out to be a beating at blackjack. Oh well, luck will have to wait!

I could use a Royal or just a few good hands in general. The casinos took some of my money for the second straight day.

Today, I will take a break from the casinos, as it appears I will be umpiring my first baseball game of the season, here in Aruba, along with one or more of my Aruban umpire friends. I think it is going to be a LL Junior League game (13-14 year-olds) in Oranjestad. I will post about that later.

This is why I talked about two checked bags in an earlier message. One is all of my umpiring equipment, uniorms, shoes, etc.

Today I plan to do next to nothing except take it easy and get ready for my game. I am going to need a nap, too. I was awoken by the phone before 6:00 this morning (and I didn't get to bed until around 2 a.m.). Apparently my gas alarm was registering at the front desk and they had to come in and check it. Readings on their meter were 0, and I haven't even used the stove. I am figuring it must have been me, then. Perhaps I need to change my diet.....
