    Happy Retirement!!

Are the rules of the game the same as in the US? I would love to take my boys to a game in Aruba this summer.

Yes, baseball rules are the same. The level and style of play is just like in the US. Fans show up to games, chant and cheer and have a good time. And the kids, of course, are the same everywhere.

I am sure when you come this summer, Jacki, you will be able to find baseball. I am just not sure where and what groups. Little League (all divisions and ages) is finished by then, but there are other organizations playing games.

Happy Retirement!!!!! Have fun umpiring. I miss watching the kids play. Our daughter played slow pitch from age 5-18 and our son played baseball from 5-15 then became more interested in golf. I'm not sure how those kids in Aruba play in that hot sun! Stay hydrated!!

I love that you umpire on vacation. I am looking forward to more posts on your stay and in the experience at the games. Happy retirement, only 20 years to go for me...lol

Time for a quick update before I head out to my baseball game.

Dinner last night was Smokey Joe's, as I made my rounds in my normal "home base" (Playa Linda area). Had "The Greatest Burger in Paradise." I have never found a reason to doubt that claim. Good to see my friends Andres, Noella and other Smokey Joe's folks.

Made deposits at my usual casinos (the Hyatt and the Excelsior at the Holiday Inn). My budget will appreciate the night away from the casinos, the way my luck has been so far.

In my next update, I'll report on my baseball umpiring. This will mark the fourth straight year I have opened my umpiring season here in Aruba. I began doing it the year after I umpired the Little League World Series, which featured a team from Aruba. I still can't get over how amazing that both Aruba and I made our one and only LLWS appearances the same year, because I have been an Aruba visitor since 1989!

    More later....

I've known Rumpire for over 37 years now (college roomates), his dedication to the sport of baseball is unparalleled. My daughter and I will be joining him at Playa Linda in 13 days for my 41st time. I can't wait !!

Those are our 2 favorite casinos on the island. Hyatt is usually pretty good to us.

Being from a baseball/softball family, the LLWS holds a special place in my heart, as 2 of my great uncles played in the first one on the Lock Haven, PA team. It must have been fate for you and Aruba to be there the same year!

Wow. The year I did the LLWS, there was a local PA team in there and they set attendance records. One game, they had 41,800+ fans there for a Little League game. They outdrew most of the major league games that night. If I get a chance, I'll post a short video of me umpiring behind the plate with Aruba playing in the LLWS.

Tonight, I umpired the first game of my 42nd season. And as I have for the last four years, I opened my season in Aruba.

I umpired the bases in a Little League game at Aruba Juniors field in Oranjestad. The game was uneventful and unremarkable (always a good thing from an umpire's perspective!).

Tomorrow (Wednesday), I will umpire the plate for a Big League game at Pos Chiquito (which is on the main road between the airport and San Nicolas), just over "the bridge". Big League is Little League's 16-18 year-old division, and they play pretty good baseball in Aruba. I can't wait.

I umpired with one of my Aruban umpire friends and another joined us at the game. We adjourned, after the game, to a little bar/restaurant call "Four Seas". We had a few beers, ate some appetizers and had a grand old time talking about our friendship, baseball umpiring, Aruba, etc. Always fun hanging out with umpire friends and especially so here in Aruba!

    More tomorrow....
    Rich
