mid week report, renaissance 1/7, riu palace 1/8-1/15

it's monday night, thought i would give you all a brief update of what has been going on.

arrived thursday at the renaissance, flights were good, check in a breeze. was very happy with our rooms except shower was leaky around the door so our floor was soaked.

we walked around a bit and ended up eating at west deck. my brother and his wife are with us and a coworker of hers recommended it. i thought the food was pretty good and the wings might have been the best i've ever had. after dinner we took some pictures of the sunset and then went into the Seaport Casino. I'm a pretty big gambler and so is my brother and the girls just tolerate it (but secretly like it more than they let on). my wife was playing one of those quick hit machines but lost her $20. she went to get up but i told her to stay put and added another 20 to her machine. on her second spin she hit 8 quick hits for $1564. needless to say she was beyond thrilled. we stayed for a few more minutes but ran with her winnings. afterwards we walked around a bit more, checked out the vendors across from the renaissance then spent some time beside the pool having drinks. before heading up to bed, we went in the Crystal Casino. we all played three card poker together and i hit three of a kind, my wife hit a straight flush and so did my sister in law. was a pretty hot table. my wife (stacy) got up before the rest of us and played some slots. after i got up from the table, i went looking for her and she was playing the quick hits game again. i sat down next to her, put in a 20, and on my fourth spin got eight quick hits for a $5000 win. by far the most money i've ever won. so in total, the first 6 hours in aruba we won about 7000, what a great way to start a vacation.

friday i was able to get a late check out and we went to the private island. island was wonderful as usual except all the damn flies. they were everywhere, especially over in the area around the food. we stayed until one or so then went to get cleaned up, packed, and headed for riu palace.

at riu we meet with karina who handles the timeshares. check in was a breeze and we were in a two bedroom, two bath unit we rented at what i thought was a great price. we didn't do the all inclusive for two reasons, one we don't drink much and two, we like to eat different places. we walked around the high rise area, did some shopping, stopped at a couple casinos and had dinner at giannis. weather of course was fantastic, was told by kids it snowed in ohio.

so saturday we did the beach again. might seem boring to some of you but this is an opportunity for us to relax, unwind and do nothing on anyone else's schedule. lounging in a chair with a good book is perfect for me.

saturday afternoon we scheduled a segway out with danny at either aruba segway tours or segway tours of aruba. can't remember and there are two of them with almost identical names. anyways, it was supposed to be two hours, ended up closer to an hour and a half. tour started off by the holiday in where the red sail group is and went to light house and back. tour was fun but i expected more. just driving mostly along the road was a bit less than i expected. danny was a real nice guy though and felt he took good care of us.

for dinner we went to daniels steak and chop house. service was great, food was pretty good too.

by the way, all the good luck at casinos has went bye bye. think i'll slow it down a bit.

sunday, same old thing. went to beach for probably six hours or more. stacy and pam did some paddle boarding and seemed to enjoy it. we had cabbed over to grocery on friday evening so all of our breakfast and lunch meals has been in the room. with our winnings, i've noticed we've been doing much more shopping than usual. kids, grandkids, everybody is getting something good. we had dinner at smokey joes, food was pretty good, service was average at best. i find i get dehydrated and drink tons of water but nobody ever came by to fill my glass. at end of meal i had to ask.

yesterday, monday, we beached again and did some parasailing. it was fun but i get pretty bad motion sickness so halfway through i thought i might be leaving something for the fish to eat. dinner was at texas de brazil and although the service was second to none, it was the worst food we have had the entire trip. i left there much lighter in the wallet but very disappointed in the food. we made it an early night because we wanted to watch the alabama vs clemson game. i didn't even make it to half time.

this morning, tuesday, we had an outing planned with the gold mine ranch for some horseback riding. got picked up at 7:50 and rode for almost two hours. the guides were fantastic and we enjoyed the ride on the horses. the transportation back is another thing. i'm sure the locals are used to the roads but both my brother and i got car sick and was on the verge of making a mess. luckily the ride ended just before we got to that point. gonna hit the pool now and do some relaxing.

    thanks for reading
