My solo trip : Dec. 6-20

I arrived late Sunday afternoon after an uneventful flight from Hartford (through Miami). I was half expecting to see long lines by the escalator to immigration that some people have been experiencing lately, but there were no lines to speak off. I veered to the left expecting to be able to try the Happy Flow line. I have the new passport with the chip. I had also filled out the new ED Embarkation form online, so I figured I would really breeze through the process. Well, it turns out if you do the ED card online, you can't use the Happy Flow kiosks. I was directed to a live immigration booth and was on my way a few moments later. It seems to me it kind of defeats the purpose of filling out the online form if you can't use the automated entry kiosks.

This was going to be a one-week trip (my 24th visit to Aruba!), but a few weeks ago a Playa Linda member offered up a room from rent at a great price due to unforeseen circumstances -- and I jumped on it. After all as we all know -- two weeks in Aruba is better than one!

Due to the added week after I had made arrangements for one, I have two different car rentals for one week each. This week, it's a Kia from Aruba Royal. They shuttled me to their location a short way from the airport and the paperwork went quickly and I was on my way to my resort.

I am staying at Playa Linda as usual. I have settled in to my usual routine of enjoying beach or pool for a few hours during the day and casinos by night -- and enjoying cold beers throughout. The luck in the casinos has been dreadful so far. I am hoping for a turnaround soon, or my casino budget is going to be severely damaged!

Most of my casino time is spent at The Hyatt. I was a little disappointed to see the bar area there all boarded up. They are renovating (expecting to reopen on Dec. 18th). They have a temporary cash bar setup to the right of the Player's Club booth. I miss not being able to play the bar-top video poker. The only other video poker games they have in the casino are a few along the back wall, but only at 25- and 50-cent denominations.

Also being renovated is the stage area above the bar where the band plays. I have also been told that the long-time band's contract was not renewed and they are no longer playing there. Apparently, they play on Saturday nights at the Stellaris casino, so I guess I know what I will be doing that night.

Restaurant wise so far this trip, it has been Smokey Joe's twice (I have never found a reason to disptute their claim of "the greatest burger in paradise!"). Last night, I ate at The Beach Bar -- a delicious order of chicken alfredo from Azzurro's. Don't expect too much variation or exciting adventures in eating over the course of this solo trip.

Oh man, I am missing Playa Linda already! They were redoing that front room of slots by the street side entrance last week at the Hyatt. Funny I didn't even notice the bar area...that seems odd coming from me..lol. we have never drank there though. I did play a little video poker at those machines on the back wall in honor of you but no luck for me either.
Not sure when, but we will be back

I am leaving on Saturday and was planning on using the online ED form. I am confused now...

Although I am from Canada, I do have the chip on my passport. If you use the kiosks what do you do with the immigration card they give you on the plane? Which do you think makes more sense, fill out the ED form and then go stand in line for an Immigration Officer or use the kiosk with the chip passport.

We used the One Happy Flow. There was an agent there to direct you and collect the forms. Very quick!

This article says that the Happy Flow line excepts the online ED form... very confused!

OK.... so I'm back here in MA cheering you on for the royal flush. Bummer to not be able to play at the bar. That's the most comfortable place for me too!

On my trip I used the happy flow but I noticed that passengers did not have a choice. There was someone standing there and directed some passengers to the left (happy flow) and some to the right immigration officer. So whether you have the chip, fill out form, someone will determine if you will use the flow or see an officer.

2 weeks sound great! I have only done that once. When I go solo I look for casual lay back places to eat like a Smokey Joe, Bugalu etc.

No umpiring stories this trip. I umpire when I come in March/April. I hope to have stories about good casino wins, but so far the casinos aren't cooperating!
