My Trip Report May 29-June 5

We arrived here on Thursday after a long 18 hour journey from LA. We realized how spoiled we have been taking a 4 hour direct flight from Newark before we moved out West. Our trip actually started Wednesday night in LA on the red eye to Charlotte and after a 5 hour layover in Charlotte on Thursday morning we finally arrived in Aruba at 3:15 Thursday afternoon. Flights on US Air were on time and we got settled into our oceanfront room at the Surf Club about an hour later after getting our bags and a car. Needless to say, we were pretty tired but excited to be back. After vegging out for a while, we headed to Barney's for an Brights and Burgers. We discovered Barney's on our last trip 2 years ago and it is a nice, reliable local option. The bar is nice, the owners are super friendly and it is just a short ride (or even walk) from the Palm Beach hotels and TS. Thursday is all you can eat ribs and it was packed with regulars. We were able to walk in, get seated, and service was pretty good along with good food and drink.

This is our 1st May trip here as we usually go in The summer and the island seems so much mellower as it is a lot less crowded. The Surf Club is actually quiet as the kids back East are still in school It's very easy getting prime palapa on the beach and chairs at the pool. The weather has been ok so far. There has been a fair amount of clouds but the temps are in the mid 80's with refreshing trade winds making it very comfortable.

We also discovered that Thursday was a holiday -Ascension Day- and both Lings and Super Fresh were closed. If I haven't bored you too much, I'll update in the next day or so. The new wireless in the rooms at the SC is really good and we just faced timed with family. More to come...

thank you for sharing and NO, not at all boring.
many of us live vicariously through other's reports.

and yes, exactly as CP says "a labor of love"............18 hr flights ! wow.
and you chose aruba over hawaii, which would have been only 6 hrs?

i look forward to reading installment 2.

Friday May 30: Friday started out overcast but the sun did make its appearance by late morning. We shopped at Super Foods 1st thing in the morning since the food stores were closed on Thursday for a holiday. This was our first trip to Super a Foods and it met most of our needs. I think Lings has a better deli and produce dept. but we did like the wide aisles and general layout of SF. Kind of a toss up vs Lings although a little more convenient to Palm Beach.

We had dinner at Wacky Wahoos and were pleasantly surprised that they had redone the restaurant. New paint job, new tables and chairs, new entrance and the bar is now up front. The air conditioning seems better too as it used to get warm during dinner...and they now have a strolling singer to entertain while you eat What hasn't changed is the fact they have have the freshest fish on the island IMHO. Food was great, service good as I had the grouper special and my wife enjoyed the snapper. We have always enjoyed Wacky Wahoo and even more so now as the restaurant itself is more comfortable. They told us that despite the increase in size they did not add any more tables- just more spacious.

We decided to head over to the Ritz after dinner and check it out. The grounds are quite nice, especially the pool area. It is lit up very dramatically with fire pits, etc. The inside is well appointed but definitely not tropical looking. Well it was time to try our luck in the casino. The casino was pretty active with a handful of $5 and $10 tables sprinkled in. The blackjack tables were overflowing so I tried my luck at the crap table. Unfortunately we made our 1st contribution to the a Ritz but we enjoyed our time. This is the only casino in Aruba that we ever left and didn't stink of smoke as they must have a great ventilation system. On a side note, one of our friends working at the Surf Club told us that a number of staff went over to work at the Ritz when it opened and were subsequently fired as they did not meet the Ritz standards. There seems to be a bit of a negative vibe toward the Ritz by the locals.

    More to come tomorrow.

    thanks jeff!!

glad to hear that "wacky wahoo" has spread out and is more spacious.
the main reason it hasn't made our list in a few years is because we always felt cramped and HOT.

again, thank you and continue to enjoy.

The skies have become mostly sunny, the trade winds are delightful, and it seems more comfortable than we usual experience on our July trips. While the sun certainly is strong, it is delightful in the water...and the beach has been the focus of our trip. We noticed more families with kids arriving at the SC over the weekend and I think the schools in the South are finished. Since this is about our 10th trip here, we haven't really had much desire to do much except chill out and eat and drink, of course so I'm going to focus on our dinners.
Saturday was MJ's. I'm always amazed/skeptical when I read critical reviews of Madame Janette's because we find it to be consistently excellent. We sat in the garden listening to a very pleasant duo while totally enjoying our dinner. It was a bit warm back there, but no bugs. Toni (my wife) had the almond grouper and I had the snapper special. Both dishes were part of the white asparagus menu which made them a bit different than we were used to and both were yummy. We barely saved room for a brownie dessert and totally enjoyed another MJ dinner.
Sunday we went to one of the newer restaurants called the West Deck. It is right past town and a short walk from the Renaissance West Deck is owned by the people who run Pinchos and is a fun place. We made reservations and I'm glad we did because the are only 12 or so tables, a bar seating area, and a "picnic type" seating area. The restaurant is built right on the water and has some pretty views. The menu consists mostly of tapas style small plates which we love because you get sample lots of yummy things. They do have 4 full sized specials for those who would rather have more traditional portions. The drinks were great, the food delicious, and the music makes this one of the more fun and Caribbean dinners. We had conch fritters, coconut shrimp, BBQ ribs, and steak and chicken skewers. Our only caution is that the service was slow as the restaurant was full. A nice new addition to our list.
