    Our Aruba trip - October 3 - 24

Left Phoenix on a red eye at 1:46 am through Miami and arrived on our beautiful island at 2:1o pm. Ran into our Aruba friends from Connecticut, Don and Cathy in Miami so it was like the amazing race to see who would get off the plane, get their luggage and meet Hans from Tropic first. They won that leg of the race but we got to LaCabana first. We don't check into our 2 weeks until Saturday so we dumped our stuff in the room we rented from LaCabana and met them at the pata pata bar for a few drinks. Nice to see all of our bartenders and staff. They always make you feel welcome. Needless to say, we were pretty tired since we had been up since 5:15 Thursday morning so we got Pizza Bob's from the Trop, which was delicious and called it an early night.

Saturday dh headed down to the beach to get our favorite palapa. It was a beautiful day at the beach until later in the afternoon the algae came in so we left early to get settled in our unit. Went to Barney's to try the Parmesan Crusted Grouper that everyone has been raving about. Dh thought it was delicious but for me, the flavor was good but it was a little too mushy for me. I like my fish a little crispier so it was my own fault, I should have realized that a topping of Parmesan cheese, mustard mayo and spices would not be crispy. We will be going back for the schnitzel. I tried it for the first time last year at Amadeus and since they are closed, I will have to try Barney's. Went to the Alhambra, stayed out way too late, a little too much alcoholic beverages but came home $100 up. Not bad for the first round.

Sunday - dh got our usual palapa and more of Aruba friends got in so it was a morning of hugs and greetings. That is what is so wonderful about Aruba, all of the friends you make from all over and when you see each other again, you pick up right where you left off last year. The weather started out great and quickly turned. The wind blew and the rain came down in buckets. Everyone hovered under their palapa and waited for it to stop but it never did. We packed up and made it to the pata pata before the second wave of down pour came, visited with Cesar at the bar, met a few new people and called it a day. Took a much needed nap after our late night the night before and thinking about Barney's again for the schnitzel. Wanted to go to Tango's for a steak but that will have to wait for a rain free evening. Hope I am not boring everyone. Will post again tomorrow.

Sounds like you got a good start on your vacation. Barneys is on our list for November and I've been thinking of the schnitzel as well. Madame Janettes also does a good version

Not boring at all! Keep the reports coming. Good to hear about your casino luck, keep it rolling! I'm excited to try the Parmesan grouper, thanks for the description, it may change our expectation a little. When I hear "crusted", I think crispier too. Enjoy your trip!
Not sure when, but we will be back

you are NOT boring us at all. we all seem to live vicariously thru other's trip reports.

Congrats on your $100 up at the casino.

Hope that the rain lets up, the sky turns blue and today's rain is the only rain you'll see.

Thanks for taking the time to post!

I love reading all trip reports. I'm a fan of both Pizza Bob's and Barneys both are consistently good at a reasonable price. Skipped them both on my last trip and am now regretting it. Can't wait to read more.

Sunday dinner at Barney's - as I said previously we decided to try Barney's schnitzel and see how it compared to Amadeus. Met the owners Ron and Elena and she told us the chicken would be drier than the pork so dh (Bob) got the pork but I still decided to go with the chicken. They were both very good but I think Amadeus was a little better. It comes with a cole slaw, salad with their house dressing and we got the au gratin potato's as our side, which were all delicious. Especially the potato's. I guess because we ended up there 2 days in a row, the owners treated us like friends that come in regularly and showed us pictures of their kids and finished off a bottle of wine they had, at no charge. It made such a pleasant dining experience that we told them we would be back! Ended the evening at Alhambra and came home a couple of hundred dollars ahead. All in all, another good day in Aruba.

Monday - another day of beach time and greeting more of our Aruba friends that got in. The day started out cloudy and the sun managed to peek through for a little while but around 3 another wave of heavy rain came through so we called it a day. The water is a little chillier than I remember ( we are from Phoenix and don't get in our pool until it is 88 or higher so maybe that has something to do with it) but considering all the rain, still very clear and no algae. Went to Tango's for dinner. I got the filet mignon and Bob got the special which was pan fried grouper, grilled shrimp and a petite fillet mignon. The meals are served with their home made rolls that comes with a garlic butter, pesto or pickled onions you can put on them. I love the butter and pesto but Bob has them all on his. You get grilled vegetables and their house potato's which are really potato wedges and all are delicious. I don't know what they season their steaks with but it is soooo good and the steaks are tender. Service is great and atmosphere perfect. Left and went to the Alhambra again (Bob loves the mississippi stud) but ended up donating our money. Still had a good day (it will be great when I get a full day of sun, lol).

Tuesday- Bob is already down at the beach getting our palapa and hanging with the boys club ( the same group of guys comes down every morning and they sit and talk about where they ate, what they did etc). Fingers crossed for a no rain day. Will report again soon!

Tuesday continued - the weather held out for us until late afternoon. It was breezy enough so you didn't melt under your palapa, the water was refreshing, fairly clear and a little bit of an under tow. Decided to stay in tonight, all in all, a good day in Aruba!

Wednesday - another day on the beach. The sun was out most of the day, beautiful blue water, white sand and good friends. Life is good! Went to Fishes and More for dinner. The roads were a little flooded so it looks like the high rise area got the rain today. I like that the rain takes turns on different areas of the island. We were seated inside and greeted by Danialla our waitress. Bob ordered the grilled grouper with a garlic sauce and I ordered the fried grouper. Both came with au gratin potatoes, mixed vegetables and warm rolls with garlic butter. We both were completely satisfied with our meal. The chef will prepare your fish anyway you want so needless to say, this place never disappoints me. Oh did I mention that we shared a warm apple strudel with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream? Outstanding. Finished off our wine and headed to Alhambra in which we came back even. No complaints here.

Thursday - heading down to the beach and will decide which of the wonderful restaurants we will visit tonight. Will update again.
