    our trip 8-14 thru 8-21

can't believe how unbelievably fast this trip went.....

flew from newark to aruba on united....airport was busier than previous trips but all went smoothly and we got to aruba on time. breezed through aruba's airport and were met by Bully's smiling face!! I have to admit i look foward to that part of the trip. seeing his smiling face is always a welcome sight! i didnt get to spend as much time with him as i would have liked but we got to chat a bit and then he got us off into our cab and off we went!

we arrived at occidental and it was about 2:30....hubby went to check us in while i went to double check all our dinner reservations. i had booked them all before i left. our rooms weren't ready but we got our bracelets (and room keys), dinners all set and got the car from top drive right there.(basically a brand new hyundai...very nice) our bags were taken and we went off to get a drink and stroll around the hotel and grab something to eat. at about 4:30 we went up to the rooms (1513 and 1511) maids were no where near being done. i asked the maid if she could get 1511 done a bit quicker and she went right to work on it. that way we at least had one room to change in and lock our stuff up. we got changed and headed down to the pool.

i have to admit, all the trips we have made, this is the first time i have stayed up in the high rise area. oh boy it was busy!! occidental was fully booked and it was hopping!!! we found a area to drop our stuff and got our first "pool" drinks and vacation began......lol

dinner this night was at Zen....the ala carte section. we ordered sushi and 2 different apps. the food was very good.( oh yeah....i forgot to mention when i say we, it was me, hubby, almost 17 yr old son and my mother. some of you may remember my mothers previous adventures in aruba with my aunt....for mom's 80th we took her with us....) my mom has not had sushi before so it was interesting...lol....and her experience with japanese cuisine was nill......after one drink (note to self.....limit her alcohol....lol) she just let the comments fly. she thought that was all we were getting for dinner...a few pieces of raw fish....i thought my son was gonna dive under the table...lol....by the time we finished the meal she was so stuffed we could have rolled her out of there! the food was off to a great start! we then went to the casino at occidental and all made a bit of a deposit but had a blast....my mother and her penny machines are gonna be the death of me i realize....lol
oh yeah...i forgot to mention that we got the wifi for the week....it was about 70.00 for the week. the one thing i didnt like was that the woman selling it was telling my hubby that it was only good for one device....so if we all wanted it we would have to pay 70.00 a person....i could tell he was gonna do it so i stopped him and said only for son because we promised him. got that all done and as soon as we walked away i told him that was baloney....son gave me the codes he used and in 7 seconds i was connected too. so do not fall for it...i also connected hubby but told him if i catch him on it too much(work) i would log him out or throw his phone in the ocean! it worked all week everywhere we went around the hotel. son would sit in the lobby at night and watch sports and chat with his girlfriend(little league world series was going on while we were there) he was in heaven...comfy couches and chairs...his girlfriend connected and all the drinks he wanted while watching sports channel!!!! so when mom was done at the casino we went out and got son and off to bed we went.

a bit on the rooms...because this was the first i was seeing mine. the room was great. really good ocean view, lots of room, king bed, working fridge, and air conditioning worked. i wouldnt call the rooms "dated"....just well used. knicks scratches that sort of thing....but over all i was pleased. mom and son had the room next door and had two beds in there connected to us....also a nice room. except she realized right away there were no hand towels and their fridge wasnt really cold......and the great hand towel escapades began.........this became the theme of the week.......

wednesday the 15th----i have to admit i am an early riser. my usual routine is to sneak off to the beach, usually it is still dark, grab my "spot" and quietly sit and read my kindle. watch the sunrise then go off in search of coffee.....its my quiet time that i never get at home......well i woke up and it was 6:30. i was shocked i slept so late.... grabbed my stuff and headed out. when i got to the beach i was shocked that almost all the palapas were taken. no people but stuff and towels. ok...i have to find a spot that is easy for mom, i forgot to mention she had broke her foot 6 weeks ago and she was wearing a boot that she absolutely refused to bring with her....so i needed a spot along the hard walkway, as she wasnt supposed to walk in the sand without the boot.(remember she didnt bring it...son who is in football planned on carrying his grandma in the sand for the leg workout...his coach actually liked this idea...lol) i found francisco and explained my issue and he brought me to a spot with a palapa but also with palm trees all around us. perfect for her foot but in the back....but close to beach and pool if we wanted to go back and forth. i then did something i have never done.....i paid him to set it up everyday for me for the week. lol i usually tip the beach staff or pool staff well but i figured what the hell...just do it and not have to worry for the week....i saw many people all week not get palapas or shade.(hotel was at full capacity and i knew it was gonna get nutz and it did.....bite the bullet and pay them and be done with it...i dont like it and i know its wrong but i wasnt gonna change it in the week i was there so i did it.) he set up our area and even got mom a sitting chair....we were right off the path...bar right there...beach and pool equal distance away....it worked. i settled in to finally sit and read and within 5 minutes mom was right there...she wants breakfast. ok, put book away and i take her to breakfast. after breakfast we walk a bit down to dunkin donuts, get coffee and go back to sit. she doesnt have her bathing suit on so she has to go get changed....ok im gonna get my quiet time to read....nope, she needs me to come because she doesnt have a hand towel and she HAS to have a hand towel. ok...up to the rooms i go. nope no hand towel...i give her one of ours because i have 3. she finally gets herself ready and we get back down....she sits...for five minutes then wants to go in the ocean. i get the feeling that the only reading time and quiet time i was gonna get on this vacation was on the plane.....i was right...lol

i realized that today was the assumption of the blessed mother so i snuck off on my own for a bit. drove up to the church....said some prayers....went to a quiet area up past malmok to swim alone and pray. my health hasnt been so good lately and the past 6 months i lost use of my left arm. i had been doing physical therapy for 2 months and regained some use....i was at 40-45% use. but still had alot of pain. i have always said aruba heals me so i prayed....and swam....then headed back. as i was walking through the hotel i thought i saw someone who i knew but they got on the elevator before i could get close enough.....

got back to the beach and hubby and son were up, went to the gym and were happily enjoying aruba! spent the whole day just swimming and drinking...lol ahhhh

dinner tonight was at lolio....their italian restaurant. it was very nice and their menu was very interesting. we all ordered and the food was really pretty good. i was a bit surprised...even mom liked it. we had a great time at dinner and then we decided to do the casino again because she found out they have free bingo....hubby and son go off on their own and i settle in to play bing...was surprised how many locals come to play...lol....didnt win so off to the penny machines we go....i won 500.00 on a penny machine!!! lol....cashed the hell out and got out of there....waited at the bar for mom and went up to the rooms.....

i get a knock on my door 20 minutes later.....no hand towels again....here we go....

so thursday i get up early....do my morning ritual.....and settle in on the beach. just get all set up and she is there wondering if i went to complain about the hand towel "situation"....its now a situation....lol...i tell her no but i will handle it. i find out from our maid, who was just lovely, that hand towels are a problem at the hotel....ok...so i ask her if i go and get hand towels will she put them in the other room each day. she laughed and i told her it would be easier than dealing with my mother...lol.....off i go searching for hand towels....lol(not like i needed to relax on this vacation or anything...) i find the towels and the maid told me to leave them in my room and she would handle it...and she did....no more towel situation. so i go back to the beach....hubby has decided to go downtown for a bit did we all want to come.....lol....off we go....stopped in to see my friends at Touch of Gold....they are wonderful people and i do really enjoy visiting with them. they have sold me pretty much all my jewelry and they had some amazing things this year for me to look at. they are wonderful guys and i would recommend them to anyone....honest and there jewelry is amazing. thanks guys! after that we walked and shopped a bit...and stumbled upon a gellato shop....OMG!!!!! go there...go there now!!!!! i will dream of the dessert i had there for a very long time!!!! thier stuff was soooooo good!

dinner tonight was at zen again but at the hibachi. mom hit the bar in the lobby while we were waiting for hubby and got a gin and tonic.....oh lord it was mostly gin....by the time we got to the table she was feeling it....she actually struck a karate pose and yelled "HIIII-YAAAH!!! i thought son's head was gonna explode...hubby was crying he was laughing so hard...me, i was just trying to contain the insanity. other people get seated....clearly speaking spanish...it took her all of three seconds to interupt them and ask where they were from? they politly tell her venezuela.....she loudly says..."oh, minnesotta...thats nice!!!" they look at her like she's nutz and thankfully the chef comes to the table....let the knives and fire begin!!!!! unfortunately our poor chef asked if anyone wanted to try.....guess who volunteered......good lord, thankfully we are all still alive, however, im not so sure the poor chef will ever ask for volunteers again! this floor show was unplanned.....

i know we hit yet another casino but for the life of me it is a blur and i have no idea where we went...lol...again walking across lobby i swear to god i see my sons baseball coach...i think i have drank too much......off to bed

Your mother sounds a bit similar to my grandmother, but your mother is MUCH more entertaining!

this is only entertaining because its someone elses mom.......up close and personal it is.....EXHAUSTING!!!! LOL we do love her though....free entertainment.....
ok...its friday morning....i do the usual routine with mom. hubby and son meet us down at the beach.....i am ready to relax. got mom a float and prayed she didnt end up in venezuela...lol. the usual beach stuff is going on...son and dad playing with a football....grandma floating around....me trying to get a moments peace....when i realize i leave something in the room...off i go. son catches up and we duck into the souvenier shop for him to look....when he looks up and is staring at his baseball coach!!! omg i am not loosing my mind!!! he and his wife are here for a wedding...turns out the bride and groom are from my hometown and a bunch of them are here for the wedding!! it was too funny....spent the rest of the day lazing around and stayed to watch the wedding on the beach later before dinner. it was beautiful...but the people crouding around were a bit much...they had to get security to ask people to move back....who would think that is ok...to get in the wedding shots....?...
this nights dinner was at Desire....it was very good. i cannot complain about the food at all...all in all it was very good for a all inclusive. desire is a bit more high end with a surf and turf option. it was good....and cooked perfectly. after dinner we got in the car and went casino hopping...it was fun and mom had a blast. off to bed....
