It is never a bad day in Aruba or at the Renaissance. We decided to spend the night in Boston at the Marriott Long Wharf prior to our departure and I did not get much sleep but my better half Diane slept like a log and I must have been the anxious one. Taking a Uber to Logan Airport was quick with no one on the road with some snow falling we were on our way. We flew Jet Blue and had an hour delay in getting off the ground due to the deicing of the airplane. We landed in Aruba and got to the bottom of the stairs to go through immigration to find the lines packed. It was good we hustled to immigration because shortly after the lines were up the stairs into the hallway.
We rented through Budget and once again long lines after hearing six planes came in about the same time, and even though we got a good price was feeling like I was back in Kodiak, AK where there was a company called Rent a Wreck. Well at least it is wheels and may try to do an exchange, it just sounds like it runs rough and can hear some rubbing on hard right turns.
We arrived late to the Renaissance and guess what more long lines and were happy to see Liliana put us in a ground floor unit Ocean View on the big wing. We o not have a view of the lagoon or pool but beautiful sunsets from our patio and say hello to the walkers and joggers each morning.
The renovations are interesting to say the least but overall very good. I find it interesting there is no suitcase rack to put your suitcase on and the patio wire style chairs have a lot to be desired. They angle way back and a little uncomfortable. I also found that there are no water pictures to mix ice tea or bowls to make a salad or use to put pasta in etc. The shower is a little weird when facing the shower head and wanting to adjust the water finding the controls behind you. I heard one owner say they plan on installing some doors to eliminate the water spraying out. All in all, I find it is a nice fresh look to the property and now they are renovating floors one through four on the small wing.
We settled in at the pool bar enjoying the sunset and chatting with familiar faces from last year. Dinner was at the Sea Salt and disappointing, having to send back very dried out fish. I never send food back and they comped the drinks and appetizer. We took good care of the server and will try again.
On Saturday went to the Aquarius at the Marina for the lunch buffet and took a ride to the Asia store looking for beach chairs striking out. Never been there before and felt it was like a big disorganized Ocean State Job Lot but definitely the place to grab a few things you forget or to make your stay more pleasant. We came back to the hotel and sat by the lagoon seeing another amazing sunset until the oil tanker headed east and blocked the sun. For dinner they had an Aruban Food Festival and we had some local food and entertainment on two stages in the Market Place. We returned for a cocktail on the patio before calling it a night.
Today being Sunday we will go to the lagoon and sit under a palm with it being quite windy and get ready for the big game where the Patriots and Packers will play an exciting game hopefully with my Pats coming out on top. I will watch it between the room even though TV reception seems poor at times to the pool bar. May order out for a pizza if anyone knows who delivers willing to take recommendations. All I can say is it is great to be back and do not want this week to end.
Even though you are planning on watching the game at the Renn, I see you have a car. The game will be on at Buster's, along with the two biggest Packer fans on the Island (Scott and Leslie). There is a $10 buffet and ice cold beer. I'm not sure of any pizza place that delivers downtown, but you are close enough to a couple of places to pop over and grab one before the game, and I suggest Pizza and More.
keep us posted buddy!
suitcases fit under bed, bed is platform and they slide nicely under there
Casa Tua pizza is fabulous!
if you have a chance try LGSmith Steakhouse early bird , reallllllly good
catch the housekeepers for bowls etc
load up towels outside your shower opening
keep us posted, love reading reports
our housekeeper was unable to get us any mixing bowls, casserole dishes, steak knives or can opener.
she said the order had not yet been deivered to the renaissance and there were no old ones around to bring.
Sunday afternoon we made it out to Busters for the game and Matt is a great host who made sure you had a cold beer in front of you never letting your bottle get empty. We walked in and it is a small place located behind Ratland. We walked in to a sea of people wearing their Packers and Patriots shirts and were invited to sit at a table with a nice couple from Vermont. Next to us were a crowd of Packer Fans and we were going back and forth during the early part of the game. Some might have even been a little harsh. One woman in her Packers shirt even looked at me and apologized saying sorry when the Pack scored. She was a little sarcastic of course but pretended to be sincere. They were nice and at half time we had to leave because the smoke was a little harsh being a non smoker. I asked the girl if by chance she was Leslie and the man with her was Scott, she replied no I am with them though and introduced myself as Bosox from the forum. We grabbed a cab, came back to the room, watching the game and unfortunately with my Patriots on the back end.
On Monday we took a ride and finally found our chairs, the folding type that fit in a nylon sack like you use for camping. We located them at the Do It Center which is like a miniature Home Depot with lots of items. I definitely will have to keep it on my list of where to go if I need something. Now to figure out if there is anyone to store two chairs with, trying to remember who stores those plastic totes as it is something we will need. We spent the afternoon lounging on the beach at the Renaissance after taking a ride to the Marriott hotel and donating a few hundred in the casino.
We decided on dinner at Pincho’s which is still my favorite restaurant on the island. I had the grilled grouper and Diane the grilled shrimp with excellent service and perfect setting under the stars.
So far a great trip and found another missing item in the units at the Renaissance which is a broom to sweep up any beach sand we might track in or crumbs on the floor. Not an expensive item and sure it would make house keeping’s job a little easier. Looking forward to another great day today and looks like we will be hitting the road this morning to head out to do some exploring and grab some lunch. Yesterday driving was a bit tough with three cruise ships in and I have yet to master the back roads when returning from the high rise area. Oh well another sunny and bright day here in Aruba and time to head out.
