Planes from the other direction!

Winds were light and variable all day today and the airplanes are landing from the south east instead of in from the north west. This is an odd site. Given the prevailing winds it is rare for this to occur. Anyway, it was something different. I've only landed this way one time in more than 14 years. And have never taken off in that direction.

This way they'll get to use that end of the runway to get their money's worth.

Still, the windmill atop the AVP building in Oranjestaad was turning and making power.

Question Interesting

Interesting day indeed.

Funny I had emailed the below to my Mom earlier today saying that it must have been hotter than

"Queen Beatrix Airport, Aruba (TNCA) 12-30N 070-01W 33M
Aug 25, 2008 - 12:00 PM EDT / 2008.08.25 1600 UTC
Wind: Variable at 3 MPH
(3 KT):0"

Will have to go back and research why the tropical lows "suck" all of the wind out of Aruba.

Any island lore on that?

Organized low pressure systems rotate counter clockwise. If one is positioned to the north of Aruba the winds are (theoretically) pushing from the west instead of the typical easterly direction. That's my theory.

Despite actual surface winds being light and variable, if you go up 30 to 40 feet they are more like 12-14 MPH. Just enough to turn the windmill for some electridad.

All makes perfectly logical sense to me.

I'll bet that makes for a "heck" of a lot of noise in the take-off area by the Ren Ocean Suites and Downtown
