It will really depend on the time of year and if we are travelling alone. The early morning palapa situation won't work for for everyone. We will definitely stay here again in the future.

Did you try eating breakfast at Bugalu? Love Gouda Cheese. When I went home they had a sale on the large Gouda cheese ball. It usually sells for $46 and I got it for $38. This morning I made a Gouda Omelette..

    Thursday - Renaissance day

We ended up going down to the Renaissance to check in around 10. We took an overnight bag and our snorkel gear. Once again we had to walk to Holiday Inn to get a taxi as there was no bellman around at Playa Linda...not a big deal its less than a 5 minute walk.

As expected our room wasn't ready so we dropped our small bag with them bellman and we were off to the private island within 15 minutes of arriving. The boat ride out was nice, a few people commented that it was rough but I guess that is relative because it didn't seem bad to us. I loved how easy it was to find chairs and shady spots. We tried the adult side first but being newcomers we wanted to make sure we weren't missing anything. We ended up sitting on the family side because we found a better shady spot. Only about 1/2 of the lounge chairs were occupied.* We walked all around to check things out. You are definitely losing space right now with the restaurant demo and construction going on. They have a green barrier wall up so you don't have to see the ugliness but you can see it from the water. They are doing a good job clearing everything out. You can see the site from the water. With the wind and wave noise, the construction noise was minimal. We only noticed it when eating at the tables set up near the temporary bar.
The restaurant menu is limited but the staff are working so hard..They are in a small space on top of each other but making the best of it and service us not suffering at all.
We snorkelled a bit. I was a little disappointed in the water clarity but there was a lot of water crashing over the rocks kind of mixing it up. We saw a few fish but nothing to get excited about. The real action was over by the bridge. Thanks to Peg we brought quarters to buy food and fed some fish off the bridge. One of the things I liked about the island was the amount of wildlife. We got the obligatory iguana pics, and even saw a hermit crab for the 1st time that it was not in a cage at the souvenier store in VA Beach. I can see how this island is the perfect place for families. The kids near us were so occupied by watching the wildlife, we had fun just watching their excitement.
We were not impressed with lunch on the island. I had a burger and Jon tried the fish sandwich but neither of us ate much. I think this is a temporary problem due to the conditions after the restaurant fire.
The island is relaxing, but we are used to bringing our own drinks and cooler to the beach and having lots of options close by for food. I enjoyed the experience but I don't think it's a place we could stay for more than a couple nights. We like the option of just walking back and forth to the beach. I can see why so many love this place, it's just not for us. I enjoyed the experience and getting answers to the unknown of how we would like it. One downside is I just can't see us having enough control over our costs with drinks and food on the island.
After about 4-5 hours on the island we saw all we wanted to see and took the boat back to the ocean suites. We were planning to check out the pool but while walking and trying to look around at the same time, I stepped in a huge dip in the pavement and fell. So if you're counting I've fallen twice, both times being on rare occasions that I was completely sober. So obviously the only solution for me to stay upright is just to keep drinking...lol.
I am okay, but did get a few scrapes this time. I have issues some times where if I step wrong in any way I can't recover like most people because my knee slides out of place so my instinct is to try to protect it. It's a long story and I probably should wear my brace more but it's way too hot and pretty much a pain to deal with. Anyway, I needed to get cleaned up so we really didn't get to see much of the ocean suites side.
We cleaned up and walked over to West Deck. I thought was just okay. The view is amazing, but our server barely said 3 words to us. We shared funchi, grouper fingers and the skewer of beef and plantains. The beef was both of our favorites. We have both kind of had our fill of fried food of all kinds at this point, even if it's grouper.
We walked around the market place and Jon checked out the Vape Lounge. They have a good selection and the guy running the counter was very knowledgeable and helpful. Jon bought one of his custom flavor liquids for his vape..for those that don't know, it's similar to an electronic cigarettes and you use liquid to smoke.
Nothing too much was going on so we decided to take advantage of our room in the Marina Tower and take a nap to get ready for a fun evening downtown.
There was a big cruise in and we checked out a few places and everything was really dead, which surprised me with a ship in. We couldn't find any action. There was some music at the marketplace but just 2 guys with guitars and more like dinner music. We tried Iguana Joe's for a drink and again the bartender barely spoke to us and we had to chase her down for our check. We walked by 7 West and Mojitos but it looked more like a dinner scene than happy hour. We just haven't had much luck downtown when it comes to finding places we really enjoy.
We headed over to Seaport Casino where we broke even...so that's almost a win.
We decided to give up the downtown area, it's just not for us. We checked out of our room and came back to Playa linda. We ended up staying in so we would be fresh and ready for a full day of anniversary celebrations on the beach.
Here at PL the early bird gets the good palapa, and we only have 2 days to finish the drinks we brought. Our make your own happy hours on the beach have been our favorite so far.

    Edit:
I'm not sure if this comes across clearly after reading my post but we did enjoy the peacefulness of the private island. It was nice having our own space and no problems getting shade. The beach was great and the swimming areas are perfect. We spent a little time floating and just taking it all in.

I just remembered one other thing about the island. Everything ended up sandy. Okay, we know we are at the beach, but we definitely missed having a palapa to hang our beach bag and the little table just to keep things put of the sand. Again, not anything really to complain about, just an observation.

Thanks Tracey & Happy Anniversary. I've never been to the Private Island but I'm not a fan of boats & When I want to get off beach, I just like to go. The boat is a deal breaker for me.

And if you do fall while drinking, it usually doesn't hurt as much...

Happy Anniversary!! Enjoy your day! I'm glad you got the chance to check out the island. At least now you know your not missing out. We were on the adult side. The big draw for me were the flamingos. Did you see them? I think because we were there fairly early we were able to get a palapa with a table. We didn't go to the family side because of the construction. When I think about it there really aren't much in the way of happy hours downtown. In the old days that would have made Tom crazy but since he no longer can drink it wasn't an issue. Sorry you didn't care that much for West Deck. Sometimes I think places get hyped so much it leads to disappointment. I loved their Carribean Prides drinks and the conch fritters. Anyhow now that we're home we'll enjoy Aruba through your reports. Hope you have a perfect day for your anniversary!

I knew in my"gut" that you wouldn't love Renaissance island. I felt Peg would love it and you guys wouldn't,
I didn't think there was enuf stuff for you guys. Please don't take offense. Take off the bucket list.🌴
As for West Deck, scenery is great, food not so much.
Our little family and extended family all grew up on the island so they think "that's Aruba".
Anyway, continue on at PL and enjoy your anniversary.
