Trip #3 to One Happy Island. 11/22/2015. 121/2015

This was my 3rd trip, DH 1rst trip. Since he was an Aruban Virgin I wanted him to enjoy every minute, and hoped all would go well.
    my first trip 2008 Riu
2nd trip 2010 Aruban (sis in law has timeshare)
3rd trip 11/22/2015 thru 121/2015 LaCabana. (Mil has Timeshare Thanksgiving week.)

i knew the trip would embrace difficulties because DH has disability issues. I knew airport would provide wheelchair assistance, but general getting around hotel and island would mean difficulties. I asked about motorized wheelchair before departure on this forum, but stubborn DH insisted he wanted to evaluate once we arrived. I was not willing to argue the issue. I knew firsthand, he would Require motorized assistance if only in the hotel.

i posted earlier my initial panic when I lost my passport enroute at Orlando Airport. Although recovered. I was stressed to the max. That was crisis #1
our travel was complicated by assistance devises DH required. Our carry on medical bags were multiple. Actually outrageous.

Flight was delicious. I dreaded our experience at Aruba airport. Upon arrival immediately connected with MIL and Sis in law. Mil was also in wheelchair, and although she is light in weight we had the struggle of 2 disabled individuals. The assistance was excellent. Of all things, the elevator was broken. Crisis #2 Yes just stick needles in my eyes at this point. After back and forth with security, we were accompanied through private access to TSA.
My sis in law (seasoned Aruba traveler secured rental car. ) I was never so glad to get in that car.
laCabana treated us with exceptional service.

Once DH got the jest of the hotel layout, he succumbed to my suggestion for motorized wheelchair. Luckily I google the service and was given a 16.00 day rate. Well worth it. Delivered to the hotel. And I could have kissed the ground in gratitude. I didn't even say "I told you so".

Pata Pata happy hour was a delight. No matter what we managed that.

Next day DH awoke with a swollen, and bright red foot. Crisis #3 We had to visit the Walk in Clinic. He was given 2 antibiotics as well as a Creme. Instructions were to walk as little as possible, elevate as often as possible. No pool, no ocean.
Not what we intended for first visit. MIL has E unit with balcony facing the beach. His view was superb.

Pata Pat daily. A must. Mil always brings a turkey, which was roasted to perfection. We made plates for the bartenders
and shared our hospitality. After 38 years this was our first time being together for Thanksgiving? Mil is 85, so this was very special to us.

We had planned to take his sister out for her birthday, but for medical reasons it wasn't feasible.
Our last evening on the island, the power in the casino went out. Crisis #4 We went to our hotel, and they also were without power.

Remember we had 2 in a wheelchair and no access to our room other than stairs. The hotel was accommodating and gave us a 1rst floor room, so we didn't have to sleep in the lobby,

Our adventure, had many twists and turns, but despite it all we had the experience of Aruba and magnificent trade winds? We were able to use the rental car to do some exploring. That was magnificent

Can't wait to return. One happy and beautiful island. Next time....no crisis at all.

Even an with the roadblocks, it was spectacular.

holy crow what an adventure and i am glad that all went well.

i know very well the challenges of having 2 with mobility issues (my parents both had polio and walked with the aids of crutches/braces/later wheelchairs)and you and yours certainly did get exceptional service. i am happy to hear that lacabana was exceptional too.

you could have been drowning in lemon juice but made lemonade!

next trip, i hope to not see the word "crisis"

    thank you for sharing.

Glad all went well and that you all had lots of fun. So nice to hear that La Cabana and everyone els was so accommodating with two people being in a wheelchair.

It reminds me of a former co-worker, she had polio and was in a wheelchair. It amazed me when she told me about the places she had traveled, like the pyramids in Egypt or going on a helicopter ride over NYC. She would always say "we hopped over there" or "we run there".

Hope your DH enjoyed Aruba and wants to return with you soon.

It certainly makes on appreciate our own mobility, when you experience what it is like to experience mobility challenges daily. Not easy by any means.
