    Trip Report - Feb. 3 - Feb. 16

Good morning everyone. We arrived in Aruba Friday afternoon. We've had this trip booked since last summer, but I didn't know if this one was going to happen. My 90 year old mother fell in Dec. and broke her hip and shattered her wrist. She had several complications and three surgeries. I have stayed with her as much as possible. In the past two months, we have been in two hospitals, two rehab centers, and now in assisted living. Last week, we had 4 dr. appts., along with meetings with therapists, insurance reps., home health nurses, etc. We are now in the process of moving her permanently from an independent living facility to long term at an assisted living facility. The day before we left, I had to give notice at her independent living and make arrangements with the assisted living to stay permanently. In the meantime, my brother had a minor stroke the week before we were scheduled to leave, and was told that he also had a heart attack. I was dividing my time between looking after my mom and supporting my brother, who was in the hospital. After many tests, mri, cardiac cath, they found no heart issues, and are now calling it a cardiac event. I got him home, and he has an appointment for a follow up with a cardiologist. I looked into canceling this trip, but trip insurance doesn't cover any of these senarios. I'm the person in my family that everyone depends on, so it is hard for me to leave them. My mother really wanted me to come, my brother insisted, and my adult kids promised to hold down the fort, so I reluctantly threw some things in a suitcase a few hours before bedtime the night before, and here we are.

We also have a business, and I do all of the administrative work, and it has been extremely hectic. Hubby also really needs this trip, so we are trying to decompress and relax. So far, we haven't done much but hang out on the beach. We haven't even felt like going to the grocery store. Last night, we picked up a few basics at the convenience store next to Alhambra. We had a late lunch here at Costa Linda, where we will be for the next two weeks. We stopped into We R Cuba, which is new since last year, and just ordered appetizers. They weren't very busy, so I hope that they stay in business. I wanted the plantain chips with guacamole, but they can't get any avocados, due to the lack of produce from the Venezuela embargo. We both got testones, which were plantain cups filled with beef and one with chicken. They were pretty good. I'd go back again.

The first night was our usual stop at Pizza Bob's for pizza and Balashi. Service was pretty good, which can go either way. We crashed early.

It's time to hit the beach. We'll be spending the day here at Costa Linda, and attending the super bowl party here at the bar. That's always a fun evening.

The caregiver roll is a demanding one. I’m glad that things are stable enough for you to be in Aruba. It’s your time to regroup so that you can support them when you get home! Enjoy the beach and get plenty of rest!

You guys went thru a really ruff patch taking care of family. I'm surprised trip insurance didn't let you cancel and I'm curious about that. I guess it depends on the plan or level of insurance. However, I'm glad you made the trip because you will need the energy upon your return. I like that little conveniance store by Alhambra. One year when I went Solo for 5 nights and stayed at MVC, I just bought a few things for the room like beer, pastiche, soda and some pre-made sandwiches for lunch. I'm staying at MVC again next March so I will take a walk there to pick up a few things. If you have dinner entry at that Cuban place let me know as I would like to check it out as well s Twist Of Flavor by Alhambra. Get some rest and enjoy!
