We're back from our 9th trip. Needless to say, we had a great time! We had an 8:30AM flight out of Newark. Everything ran smoothly in the airport and we had a good flight. We arrived in Aruba on time, got our luggage quickly and KTS was waiting for us. We all loaded onto the bus and could hear the driver talking on the radio. He kept mentioning "the princess". Everything had to be done around "the princess". I thought he was talking about some fussy tourist. Well, to make a long story, short, after several questions we found out the "the princess" really was "A Princess". The Queen's sister was staying at the Radisson and we couldn't be dropped off while she was checking out. So he dropped some people off at the Holiday Inn first, and then brought us to the Radisson. The princess was gone and on her way to Holland and we were able to check in.Check-in was a breeze after that and the room was ready. Our room was in the Bonaire Tower overlooking the gardens. Nice view We unpacked and made it just in time for Happy Hour. So relaxing! Half price drinks, great music, and gentle breezes blowing. A nice way to relax after a long flight.
Each day our routine was basically the same. We may sound boring, but we just love the beach. Breakfast between 7:00 and 7:30, on the beach by 8:30, a long walk along the water to the Phoneix. Then swimming, reading, a short nap, more swimming and talking with friends that we made over past trips. Usually stayed on the beach until about 4:30, except one night grabbed a bottle of wine and watched the sunset. Stayed on the beach until after 7:00PM. Wow! That was an 11 hour beach day! Sunset was amazing Will try to upload the pictures soon.
Amicis - very causal Just went there for a light bite because we were tired after our flight. Just had paninis and espresso. Then went to Moomba beach for a quick drink.
Sole Mare - Great meal and great service. My daughters ordered the gnochi. They said they were light as feathers. DH and I had the spaghetti wheel. Declicious.
Chef's Table - Excellent Each of us had a different meal and all of us enjoyed our meals. Desset was wonderful. We ordered the tapas which were $2.00 each. They come in tall shot glasses. Just enough to satify your sweeth tooth. Being there were five of us, we ordered 2 each, which means we ordered all "10" varities on the menu. Examples : creme burlee, key lime pie, mousse, etc. What a treat!
Madame Jeanette - Again another great dinner. I had the almond grouper - my favorite. Nice entertainment and another good dessert. The chocolate souffle --Yummy. Had to go for an extra long walk after dinner.
Atmophere was wonderful. I just love this restaurant. Everything was so pretty. I had the filet mignon. It was so tender and tasty. One of the best steaks I ever had. By the way, it was encrusted in gorgonzola cheese. Needed to swim extra laps the next day.
Old Man and the Sea - Another beauty. The food was excellent, service top notch and the entertainment was lovely. Saxophone/flute player strolled amongst the tables playing relaxing music. Restaurant was only about 1/2 full. Maybe because of the $30 cab fare. The mahi mahi was excellent.
Needed a break from eating big meals. Just went across the street from the Radisson to Casa Tua for pizza. It was tasty.
Not a good day. As usual during the day we were in the water. I was up to my shoulders and got stung by something. I don't know what. Maybe a bee or some other insect. I don't think a fish (I don't know if there are any that sting). I didn't see anything. It really stung and from past experience I know I have a problem with bee stings. I went to the towel hut for first aid. They cleaned it and I took benadryl because I could tell I was having a reaction. They advised me to call the house doctor. He was on vacation so they suggested I go to the clinic. I did. Ended up gettting a perscription which by the way only cost $4.77. Probably would cost about $100 here. Kind of put a damper on the rest of the day. I got good care at the clinic but couldn't figure out what stung me. I had the weirdest reaction. I had stinging over my entire body for several hours. If anyone has any suggestions, would be glad to hear them. Dinner was just a quick bite again at Amicis after a hetic day.
So sad knowing it's our last day. Took our last walk along the beach, last dip in the pool and the sea, and our last "happy" or "UNHAPPY" Hour.
Screaming Eagle - After reading good reviews on this board, we decided to try it. Another great meal. Sat outside on the patio. There was a beautiful breeze and the service again was top notched. Food was excellent. The only complaint I have is we really didn't have room for dessert. We shared the chocolate cup filled with sherbert between the 5 of us. I just wish we could have tried a few others. Have to go back there next year. It looks like a great place inside to go for after dinner drinks at the bar, maybe even squeeze in some desserts. After dinner, we headed down to the Marriott Casino to gamble. We stayed there only about 20 minutes. It was much too crowded for me.
Day 10 Very sad. Time to leave. After breakfast, went to say good-bye to all the staff members we know. I told them I will see them next year. Then got ready to go to the airport. VACATIONS GO TOO FAST!
We had another great vacation. I just love the Radisson. I know it is crowded on Plam Beach, but you don't get that feeling at the Radisson. Once you walk into the open air lobby, it's like walking into another world. The grounds are beautiful and spread out. The pools are never crowded and we had no problem getting a palapya each day. Also the beach is wide so you don't feel like you are too close to the people next to you. They have a great staff and your every need is met. Can't wait to return next year
No one mentioned anything. Last summer (2008) when we were there, some of the staff had told us about the plans to renovate. It sounded like quite a big renovation. It was supposed to start in Nov. 2008, but I guess with the economy plans were put on hold. There were quite a few promotions announced when we were there this summer. People moved into different positions, but can't recall all the names.
great report...great memory....wonder what stung you...I think jellyfish can cause that kind of reaction but I don't know if they frequent the waters around the island ???
Glad to know the reaction wasn't worse and you were able to finish your vacation without any problems...
Lindon, I didn't even wish you a good vaca and now you're home. Sorry about that, and sorry about your bite. Nasty wierd bug bites! Your trip report was excellent, good memory on what you ate. Thanks for the positive upbeat report on the restaurants.
Alto Vista Chapel, Renaissance Island, Arashi Beach
Thanks for the trip report! I wish I could be in Aruba right now! Consulted my husband ( M.D.) and he strongly thinks you were stung by a school of mini jellyfish. There was no way you could have known they were there. They usually are in sting mode right after a full moon. So far in Aruba my husband has treated coronary issues, someone who had an allergic reaction to seafood, eye infections, and someone who ripped his foot apart on coral! Not a bad idea to check at the desk to see if an MD is a guest at your resort!
