BeachWater Condition at the Surf Club

We're Marriott Surf Club timeshare owners and in the last 2 years we've experienced bad water (smelly) each time we've gone on the 1st week of November... Supposedly the explanation was because of rotten seaweed (brought in by nearby Hurricanes or storms in the Ocean) that had accumulated under the sand. As people go in the water the smell comes up as they step on the seaweed. We're leaving this Sat. Oct. 31st for a 7 day stay and I'm curious if anyone can confirm that this year there's no problem with the water in front of the Surf Club... anyone?

No problems. we were there during the first week of october and the beach was cleaned. there were no seaweeds and the sand was not muddy.

you were there at the Surf Club or on Eagle beach? Cause I noticed when we walked to the Marriott Hotel or to the Holiday Inn it didn't smell as much....

I was told that the water problem at the Surf Club was due to the erection of the new dock. This past July was my first time there so I don't have much to go on. The water was beautiful. About 75 feet out though the bottom felt muddy.

I heard that one too but the more I spoke with locals about it the more I believed the hurricane/storm and seaweed version... Apparently in other months that wasn't the case, i.e. the bad water and smell was at it's worst during the months of October and November the last 2 years. Last year I heard the Marriott Surf Club had contracted a local company to clean out most of the rotten seaweed, problem was that it was only scheduled to be done a week or 2 after we left.

I was there during the clean up and they did an amazing job. The problem with the ocean was that the old retaining wall held in all the garbage and there was no water movement for all those years. Once the break wall was removed they wanted to see how quickly it turned around. Compiled with that horrendous storm last fall that brought in record amount of seaweed, it was a mess.
