Received this response back from the Bucuti about Palapas:
We did indeed change from the thatched palapas to canvas umbrellas this past
week. The beaches on Aruba are public, which means that by law we cannot forbid anyone from sunbathing on our beach. Luckily we do not have a major issue with crow...ds, however there are occasional outside visitors, and we make every effort to retain the facilities for the sole use of our guests. Any "permanent structure" on the public beach, like the thatched hut, is considered available for public use. Having umbrellas that we can close or even remove, allows us to manage their use better. The thatched palapas also require a lot of maintenance and frequent replacement of palm leaves. We have found that we do not have enough palm leaves to keep up with the highest level of upkeep, and choose not to import them from South America, for eco-friendly reasons. We chose the new, large umbrellas to provide effective shade, with a neutral color to keep the beach looking pleasantly uncluttered. The change is intended solely for our guests' maximum enjoyment of the beach. Thanks for keeping an eye on us via webcam!
