Inside the RIU Palace

Just wanted to give a small review of our
first try at AI.
We are at the 4th. day at the RIU. We normally never do AI as we want the freedom to do what we want, when we want it.
But we are here waiting to sign on our house in Aruba, so for the few days we thought we would try it, and thought I could share our experience here.
The RIU Palace has a perfect setting right on the beach (Palm Beach). It is only one year old, so things looked good on paper.
The check-in part was a little confusing and time consuming, guess they are not used to guest who just make a normal booking directly on the website a few days before arrival. At least they were confused that we didn't have a waiver, but after a while they found us in the system.
The room we got was a Junior Suite with sea view terrace. Ok size, looked older than one year, but guess there is a lot of wear and tear. The big disadvantage of the room was that it was extremely damp. The floor is actually wet, the blanket feels wet and the air in the room is very moist. We tried with the AC on, with the AC off, with the terrace doors open and closed, but it didn't change. Ok we are right on the water, but never experienced this at any other hotel at the water.
Food and drinks. As mentioned we never tried AI before, so we were expecting the food to be less good, the drinks to be of lesser quality and the staff to be less accommodating than in places were tipping is a bigger part of their paycheck.
Food: The buffets were not a world class experience, but actually far better than expected and with good variation from day to day.
We tried to follow someone here's advice to book at the restaurants instead of the buffets, and tried the Japanese one. It was ok I guess, but nowhere near what a good a la carte Japanese restaurant would offer, we actually think the buffets are better.
(We did not experience any trouble getting a table as others have had, even though it is the Easter week).
The drinks are strong, but WAY below the standard you would get at other hotels, way too much artificial drink mixer in them and no care to detail at all.
The staff was the big surprise. Since most people don't tip all the time or ever, we did expect a more nonchalant service.
Boy were we wrong. Never seen such an over all level of service, happy people serving, very friendly. Accommodating but still at a peer level with the customers, and you could hear that with repeating guest they are like old friends. So if the attitude from the staff at the hotel is important for you, this is the place.
Regarding other facilities at the hotel: We didn't try much as we were here for other reasons than just doing the normal tourist thing. One thing we did watch from the terrace every early morning to our amusement, but at the same time astonishment, was how at first light you saw guests running....yes actually running to "reserve" their cabana on the beach or chair by the pool. These people was behaving like they were in the finishing 1/4 mile of a marathon and was deadly serious about their thing .
You will never see this at Eagle Beach, but it was fun to watch.
Conclusion: We probably will not do AI again, but that's just our preference. But the RIU is an impressive building, but with its flaws, but the staff almost makes up for any flaw on other things.
(We didn't bring our kids on this trip, but it seems like a very kid friendly place to stay).

Thanks for your review on the Riu!!!

I agree with you on Eagle Beach. It's one of my favorites.

Salsa Greetings,

One of the buildings has not yet been renovated, perhaps that was the one you were in.

When we stayed on Eagle Beach (La Cabana) a few years back during high season, there was lots of running to the beach to get chairs. I guess where ever you go during the popular times of the year this is bound to happen!

In your opinion, do you think the Riu is acceptable for a honeymoon if we are staying on a high floor in September (after US kids are back in school)? Will tall the mixed reviews from others, I am still nervous about the Riu even though I have it booked already. Also, which building was your room in? I want to make sure I get a renovated room.

Aruba History:
Lou: Visited on a cruise in 2005
Lou&Nay: Will visit on our honeymoon 9/2008

We don't stay at the Rui but we had a lot of families from our hometown there when we were there. I would say, especially if its your honeymoon, not to stay there. There is no quarantee that you won't get the non-renovated room. We had friends stay one week at the Rui and one week at the Marriott, Rui not the same.

The beach is windier than other parts of Palm Beach. The Westin (which is right next door) is on the point and it is even windier. If you have read lots of posts on this BB, most regulars will tell you not to do the all inclusive. If you like to do water sports, sit on the beach, etc. getting around at night to all of the great restaruants is a wonderful way to see Aruba. One of the reasons Aruba is such a great island is that it is safe to move around the island. AI are best left for other islands that are not as safe as Aruab like Jamaica.

The pool at the Rui is very sparse without much in the way of greenery. Perhaps, you might look into the Radission which is a very nice hotel with a breakfast only component. Good compromise or else go to a timeshare which allows you the ability to do your own thing for breakfast and lunch (and alcohol too).

riu

I spent my last week in February at the RIU. After 5 other glorious weeks at Occidental and Costa Linda, this was a HUGE disappointment. I felt like I was on a Carnival Cruise all week. (that's not a good thing) The food was adequate, the drinks ok, the staff unhelpful and not good communicators.

If I was going on my honeymoon, and I wanted an all-inclusive, I'd stay at the Occidental. If you can afford the Royal Suites, go for it. They are fabulous. If not the regular rooms are really really nice. Just redone two years ago. Smaller resort so much more relaxing. If you don't want the all inclusive you can rent a timeshare unit from an owner and stay in a suite with a kitchen. Eat where and when you want.

Eagle Beach is the best area on the island. I don't consider LaCabana a real Eagle Beach resort. I think the other person who answered you was referring to places like Costa Linda or Buccuti Beach (best place on the island for a honeymoon - in a Tiara Suite.

I have been going to Aruba twice a year for 10 to 12 weeks a year. If you need any help email me at macalh@aol.com.

I agree with macalh - Bucuti Beach or Manchebo are great. Aruba's zoning at the 'real' Eagle beach restricts building height so there is no way the beach can ever be overcrowded. Quiet, beautiful, big beaches. Also, they are actually ON the beach and steps away from their pools. LaCabana is across the road. These are like small boutique hotels and I think Bucuti was recently renovated. Also agree on Costa Linda too - we have owned there for years and love it. Same beach, next to Bucuti. Full condos, 2 bdrms, 2 baths, kitchen, l/r, patio (or balcony), etc. Having breakfast and/or lunch from your own kitchen is great. If you want a little more luxury and be waited on for your whole stay though I would recommend the Hyatt or the Radisson. Haven't been to the Occidental. Marriott is too big now - too crowded. Do you want to get up at 5 am to get a chaise?
Hope you have a wonderful honeymoon, and congratulations!
Wherever you stay, take a little time to investigate some of these other places for your next trip!

Recap and solves Mystery with wet room

Sorry about the late reply, but we had to wait for Internet in our new holiday house here in Aruba.
Loy&Nay: We were staying in the "main building" where the lobby is in. The rooms are renovated and ok, but we did have the problem with the wet room. We have now learned why (from someone who supposedly know). As always the building/renovation here in Aruba it was delayed, but they had already taken reservations. So they didn't let the concrete dry as it should. So it will take a long time before the damp is out of the rooms. My wife is not too crazy about the air conditioning, so we turned it off for long periods. This is what made the wet conditions appear. So if you keep the AC on, you should not have this problem.
But to recap I would take Manchebo or Bucuti any day over RIU.
Also, I totally agree with Randi, All Inclusive are neither necessary or maybe even desirable on a safe island like Aruba. Too much other stuff to try out.
But as mentioned the staff is great and the outside areas of the RIU is impressive, but not my first choice.
But HEY, I would rather be in a tent full of holes in Aruba than anywhere else in the world , so don't worry, it will be great.
