Reporting Site: Pelagic Sargassum in the Caribbean

During 2011, massive quantities of pelagic sargassum occurred throughout the Caribbean, impacting aquatic resources, fisheries, shorelines, waterways, and tourism. A similar event is occuring in 2014 and continues in 2015.
In the effort to better understand critical aspects of this phenomenon, this website serves as a data collection center to accommodate reports of large quantities of pelagic sargassum observed within the region during 2015. The website provides easy access for data entry and represents a service to those interested in contributing to the information database. Data provided to this site will be used by Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) scientists and colleagues throughout the region to identify the source and examine the movements and causes of this extraordinary event.

We need to remember that this is a massive natural occurrence and that Aruba's contribution to it is not really measureable (too small). Natural currents and wind direction impact which resorts are impacted by it, and which are not.

    Thanks, Cindy.

I wanted to find out what causes the seaweed to grow. And came by chance across those recent articles. I also looked at the map to see in which areas of the Caribbean this massive seaweed occurred, so far, it reaches from Mexico, Belize, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago.

Here is another article from the Washington Post:

Beautiful Caribbean beaches now a smelly mess after massive seaweed invasion

I agree. I'm rather worried in which way Aruba will be effected.

It seems that in 2011 there was as well an unusual amount of seaweed. However, this time, it seems to be massive and it seems it shows up at unusual places.

Here is a very interesting link with maps:
